Technics SL-L3 Cleaning and Lubrication of Tonearm Rail

Post by colibri44 » 14 Mar 2019 19:17

My TT
Technics model SL-L3 has a problem that the tonearm gets stuck sometimes.
l think it needs a re-lubrication of the tonearm rail.
What kind of grease should l apply ? And how do l remove old grease?
Thanx for any advice
Pedro

The safest solvent is probably nothing at all - you may be able to remove the gummy lubricant by rubbing with a cloth, and that would be a good start. But there is probably more lubricant in the arm sleeves that ride on the rails, and this is probably safer to do with a solvent than by disassembling and cleaning with a cloth. I've used WD40, which softens and dissolves a lot of dried lubricants, and has some temporary lubricating ability (I believe it is largely kerosene and evaporates after a while). If you apply some to the rail and sleeves and run the arm back and forth, and then wipe everything carefully with a cloth and then apply a small amount light grease, you'd probably be fine.
But there may a worm gear that also needs cleaning and relubricating, so check.

While you are removing and renewing the lubrication check the condition of the tonearm drive belt. It may need to be replaced.

Download instruction and service manuals from the VE library.

I first clean off the guide rail(s) with alcohol and a paper towel then put the carriage at mid-position and dribble alcohol into each end of the linear bearing then slide the carriage back and forth from end to end then clean off the rail and repeat as many times as necessary until my paper towel comes out completely clean. Then I lube the bearings and the rail with a very light synthetic oil.

Thank you for the inputs.l cleaned the tonearm with Isopropyl Alcohol and then applied a silicone based lube.
The tonearm moves perfect again!
Cheers
