Intermittent 'crackling/buzzing' noise from PL-12D

Post by tincatinca » 21 Oct 2019 18:12

Hi
I've just obtained a PL-12D and have done a fair bit of maintenance on it to ensure that it runs to the best of its ability, however I'm having a problem with a low level, intermittent crackling/buzzing (not hum) type sound. The noise disappears as soon as I switch on the turntable using the On Up switch. If I then turn it off using the switch and leave the turntable to stand, the noise will return eventually and I can then switch it on again to get rid of the noise! Obviously this isn't a problem when playing a record but if nothing is playing, there is this annoying noise every so often. Any suggestions as to the cause and/or a solution?

It looks like the issue was a low level earthing problem. The turntable was plugged into a different mains socket to the amplifier. Changing that seems to have sorted the problem.
