Pioneer PL-530 interesting issue

Post by bob1123 » 20 Jun 2019 04:38

I recently bought a PL-530. The turntable had some damage, but I think I've fixed almost everything. The only thing left bothering me is that the tonearm seems to "push down" the stylus into the cartridge more than the other pioneer tables I have. I've run several head shells and the same thing happens with all. I've balanced the tonearm and set the weight correctly. I'm running about 1.75 grams, and I verified this with a small digital scale. I have attached some pictures for reference. Should I be concerned? Is there some problem I missed or does this model somehow just run that way?

That does look "wrong". Maybe the cantilever suspension is shot. What model Shure is that?

Are you sure about your scale?

The model is a Shure M91ED. I have a PL-514 that I know is solid. I'll try this head shell on that turntable tonight and see if it sags the same way it does on the PL-530.

The scale I'm using is one of these:

I've never had trouble with this scale before. Once I balance the tonearm and rotate the tonearm weight to the correct number, the scale reads pretty closely to what the weight should be.

I popped the droopy head shell in my PL-514. The head shell from the 530 slumped down on the 514 just like it did on the PL-530. The normal one from the PL-514 worked fine in the PL-530. Seems like It's time for a new stylus. I must have damaged the cantilever somehow while I was fixing the turntable.

:( After you get the new one, you might as well try to gently bend the old one back down. Nothing no lose.
