help with new cartridge for PL15

Post by Bristlehound » 15 May 2019 07:45

Hello,
I have a Pioneer PL15 and have now had a year of enjoyment with it playing constantly. Recently, I noticed some top end starting to shed, like the needle had dust on it, it didn't. I figure it might be time to replace the needle? Am I better off just getting a new needle or get a whole new cartridge? If so, which could anyone recommend - needle or cartridge? Can I upgrade the current cartridge and expect better sound? I really appreciate any help, I'm missing my music now but don't want to play more until I get it sorted.
thanks again,
John.

Hi John, it would help if you told us what the cartridge is. It may well be worthwhile getting a new stylus without the expense of a cart too. Sure loads of recommendations will be forthcoming with this knowledge. Regards, Neil.

If your stylus is very worn, you may be damaging your records with it. If absolutely nothing else has changed in your system, that indicates that the stylus is the cause of the reduction in sound quality. Depending on the model, you can get a better stylus without changing the cartridge. If you don't know the model, post a close-up of it. You can also remove it from the head. shell. The model number may be printed on the top of it.

Thanks for your replies. Here are some pics of the cart. Can't see any identifying numbers, only that it's Pioneer. Really appreciate your help
John.

Oh, I guess that's still in the head shell. I'll try taking it out and see what I find...

You would need brand and model number of the cartridge. It should be on the cartridge somewhere. Any used table may not have original cartridge, so stylus listed in manual may or may not be the same..
