New in box PL-12D?

Post by Angelsguardian » 18 Jan 2018 15:08

Bit of a tease for now. Hopefully arriving tomorrow is what might be a new in box PL-12D from 1973.

Other than needing a new belt as the unfitted one has perished I don't know a lot about it other than it came from a house clearance and comes to me as the result of a very, very cheeky offer on a well known auction site.

As far as I can see there is some damage to the front of the plinth but the rest looks like it could be unused. Looks like an Audio Technica cart. Any ideas what may have been fitted in 1973?

Any thoughts on what else to check (I realise that unused for 45 years means it will need a good service) other than foam, rubber, belt etc much appreciated.

Hey Angelsguardian...It looks very good! =D> I happen to love my PL-12D II...It came with an ADC Q321 cart, but I'm using one of my Shure M91ED cartidges now...One of my favorites!

I did have to buy a new belt and a spare dust cover, due to the original being cracked in the back, but she's still one of my favorite machines!

If you want to get her up to spec, I suggest you read this very informative blog from our member jives11 in detail...

http://mr-ives.blogspot.com/2013/07/res ... table.html

He covers quite a bit there! :D

Hopefully, you can get her up and running...The Audio Technica cartridge may be good, too...If you can find out what the model is, we might be able to offer some stylus suggestions...

Thanks. That’s a good looking machine and an excellent blog thanks.

I’ve got a belt on the way from Thakker as I believe they’re very sensitive to the belt. I’ll get more information and pics assuming it turns up tomorrow. What do you think the chances of the cart being good are?

Thanks again.

Thakker seems to get a lot of good reviews. In regards to the cart, it's hard to say, but I would probably look for a new stylus for it anyway, just in case...There is bound to be an option or two that would work for it! Let us know what it is if you can...Maybe a closeup of the cartridge would help...AT in general make some very good cartridges...I have an LS-300 on a Dual 1226 and a recent purchase (as of last year), an AT120 E/T and they both have their merits! :D

It's arrived and I'm very pleased. Once I can get the pics resized I'll post them.

In the meantime the cartridge is an Audio Technica 110E of what vintage I have no idea. Any thoughts on a suitable replacement for not massive money for the moment? AT95E maybe?

Is it new and unused? I'm not sure. There are marks that could be long term storage or could be from use. On the other hand things like the original ribbon still being in place on the belt to pull over the motor pulley make me think maybe it has never been used. Either way I think a great find for £70 including postage and I'm sure will provide a lot of entertainment.

Please remember this is only my second turntable in a very very long time. So I've setup the arm according to the manual and seeing that the tracking weight is between 1 & 2 according to Audio Technica but I can't get it to reliably play. On various records which play find on my Dual this one just skips. If I increase the tracking weight it helps but doesn't stop it. Am I likely to have done something silly or is it most likely the stylus is very old and needs replacement? Thanks

A few thoughts (in no particular order):
- Nice find!
- I suspect it may have been used at some point. If I recall, the headshell and cartridge weren't shipping attached to the tone arm. I think they were in a recess within the styrofoam packing (like the other accessories)
- The cartridge is an Audio Technica AT110E LC OFC - not just AT110. A decent cartridge that sells for around $30 with a fresh elliptical stylus in the US.

Thanks I'm pretty pleased.

That cartridge doesn't seem to be available over here any more and even replacement stylus are rare. I can get an AT95E new for less than a replacement stylus. I suspect the stylus suspension is stiff after so long and may loosen up. Or not.

Here are some more thoughts...

http://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php? ... ge.597392/

Personally, while the AT95E might be OK, if you could save a bit more and go for an AT120E, it would be so worth it...I got mine for under $100 by searching around online...Sometimes, you must be patient, but I found this nice original AT 120E/T and one of the members here, Kurt, sent me a nice stylus (AT122EP) to go with it!

I wrote more about it here...

It really is a fantastic cartridge for the money and IGD (inner groove distortion) is about non-existent...An excellent upgrade, for sure! :D

Thanks for that.

At the moment I'll probably wait to get something good as I know a 95 would only be stopgap but at least an affordable one. Currently the 110 is loosening up but is a bit muddy, probably the currently excessive tracking.

Ignoring the costs for a moment can anyone tell me the suitability and advantages of any of the following:

AT 120eb
AT VM 530en
AT 440mlb
Ortofon 2m Red

As these are readily available to me once I can find the funds. Thanks again.

The go to cartridge when the PL12D was current was a Shure M75ED. I seem to recall paying £36 for mine (TT and cartridge) around the same time as the date on your Comet receipt. I still have it though not currently in use.
The 75 isn't available new now of course but you could add a Shure M97HE to your list. If you can find an AT 440 mlb I would definitely take it over the 2M Red but I'm not familiar with the other ATs you list.
