Cartridge for PL-61

Post by JackMorgan » 15 Mar 2019 00:24

Just got a used PL 61 has a headstock but I need a cartridge. Any recommendations? I was looking at a Grado Black prestige 2. Also should I go ahead and replace the headshell as well? Would a new cartridge on an old headshell affect sound quality?

I am not familiar with the Grado cartridge line and can't comment on their performance. However I doubt you would have a problem in getting it to play. Now whether its an optimum match or not is the question. You should not have to replace the headshell. Headshells have different weights and can effect the way the arm is balanced and the cart/arm resonance. I would try what you have first. Be sure to tilt the machine up from the back to set the lateral balance weight. Its covered in the manual. I had to replace the platter shaft thrust plate in mine. That solved my rumble problem. Just be aware this could happen.
I'm using a Micro Acoustics MP 530 vintage cart in mine with good results. Good luck with the machine.
