How to use Audio Technica AT6012 Record cleaner kit

Post by emrah » 21 Jan 2010 14:02

Hello. :)

This is a novice question... I just purchased an Audio Technica AT6012 Record cleaner kit. I haven't used a similar vinyl cleaning kit before so I have two questions:

Do I use this kit on the records while they are on a turntable, spinning?
Or do I put the records on a flat surface and use the brush on them?

If I am supposed to put the records on the turntable, do I simply hold the brush stationary and let the turntable/record spin or do I move the brush?
and in which direction? the velvet brush seems to be directional...

the instructions on the box do not mention this.

thank you very much and have a great day :)

here is a picture of the kit : http://www.insound.com/noteworthy/images/AT6012.jpg

The instructions sound like it should be on the turntable to me.

The brushes with the velvet pad can be used either on or off the turntable. If i have a record that needs some serious scrubbing, i usually do it off the TT. For light dusting, you can use it as the record revolves.
Use it as you would a lint brush, so the fibers push into the grooves. Dampen the leading edge, rotate around the record, and rock it backward to lift the gathered dust off the surface as you continue, before lifting it off.

Cheers,
Alec

Thanks a lot Alec and j_loop. :D

I will start cleaning the records today. These are some LPs that were made in the early 70s and last played in the late 70s or early 80s. They've been stored in a cabinet for 30 years.. :)

I just used this cleaner for the first time yesterday. When putting the records on a flat serfous, what kind of flat serfous should they be on? The cleaner didn't help the records sound any better. This is either because I didn't do it right when I cleaned them, or they are too scratched up.
