Post by Canadianguy51 » 24 Sep 2019 15:56

I know this has probably been talked over and over, like to know a good ratio to use just to clean records?

it's usually 25% IPA (100%) rest pure water, drop or two of a detergent/surfactant. I use BAC (Benzalkonium chloride) for that. I wouldn't use soap of any kind.

Well pure water would be fine with me, doesn't cost. Not sure what Benzalkonium chloride is?

Straight 91% isopropyl does the job. Cleans pefectly, and leaves no residue.

and according to chemists, changes composition of the vinyl and makes it brittle. 15% or less is recommended.

I read the question improperly then. I took it to mean "stylus cleaning". I agree that I would not allow any form of alcohol to touch the record surface.

Do you purchase this in a specific product or as Benzalkonium chloride? I am only finding it in Canada in antiseptic wipes.

I like that people are avoiding high alcohol levels and including quats in their solutions. Bravo!

I encourage those who use IPA out of habit to try to reduce or even completely eliminate it from their solutions to see if results remain satisfactory. No need to add anything that doesn't bring something to the table!

as pure BAC (or 50% solution).

I would agree with Vince about IPA (propanol). Although it is less polar than water, when used as a 25% solution, the polarity only drops from about 10 for pure water to around 8.5 . Pure IPA has a polarity of around 4.

For very stubborn problems (on vinyl) I use d-Limonene, which is non-polar, and can get rid of hydrocarbons. It is extracted from orange skins, so is renewable, and has insecticidal properties!

~20ml of Audio Intelligent Down with Dirty solution to ~450ml of distilled water. Vacuum off with a RCM, rinse with distilled water, vacuum off again.

you will find that the detergent/surfactant will help, whatever solution you use, to get into the grooves, rather than settle on top.

I said no soap, which has a specific meaning in the English language. A detergent/surfactant is needed, but not a soap.

So 25% IPA (Propanol) 75% pure water and a drop or two of a detergent/surfactant (you really don't need much), just enough to lower the surface tension.
