Record brushes looking like a shaving brush

Post by htk99 » 22 Apr 2019 22:50

Browsing through aliexpress for accessories I noticed the sellers there are selling brushes that look like shaving brushes, presumably made of some synthetic hair. (type & search record cleaning brush and you will find these).
Has anyone tried one of these?

Several brushes have been made through the years that have similar small brushes that are made to track the record along with the tonearm, nothing new here.

I don't understand what you mean, this is not one of those products that track along with the tonearm. It's a handheld brush similar to a very large shaving brush, i.e. for similar use as a carbon fibre brush.

Doesn't look like a very good design for cleaning records.
I've tried lots of brushes over the years.
My favorite is the Audio Technica AT6012.
You can get one for about $17 on ebay or amazon.
For some reason, the AT6012x costs more, but comes with no bottle of fluid.
Also, the AT6012 has holes in the top. You can drip a few drops of distilled water inside the brush to humidify it and reduce static. The AT6012x doesn't have those holes.
Get the one without the "x".

This is for removing surface dust, not for deep cleaning.

Yes, I'm a bit sceptical on the design as well. I imagine it will actually add a lot of static. I was thinking if it can lift off a lot of dust it could be usefull to dust a record before washing in an ultrasonic bath and thus keeping the cleaning solution cleaner. There's a lot of positive commentary in aliexpress and amazon, but first hand comments from here would be a lot nicer.

A brush that can't be thoroughly cleaned of particulate, just wind up smutzing dust around the record surface.

Synthetic fibre, goat hair, whatever + wooden handle = no static being discharged through contact with you.

Money spent on a useless vinyl revival cash in repurposed shaving brush thingy ? Priceless.

Carbon fibre brushes work well and are inexpensive. I'd pick a tried and true carbon brush over that thing.
