Pressing defect?

Post by htk99 » 22 Apr 2019 21:01

An otherwise excellent condition record had skips on multiple locations, and there seemed to be some kind of spots on the those places that I could see with a naked eye and feel with a fingertip. So I took out my usb microscope and this is what they look like:

It is hard to see from the low resolution of course, but to me it looks like this piece of whatever is embedded in a hole in the vinyl? Has someone decided to use the record as a shooting target or is this some kind of pressing defect?

Hello
At one time, record companies started recycle their unsold vinyls to make new ones. At first, they removed the label part before cutting the disc in cubes for the molding presses. But someone thought that it was a waste of material... And the used the whole disc label included. You may perhaps see the result on your record.

Used record ? Could it be a burn, maybe a little piece of burning ash from a cigarette or something ? Doesn't look like label paper from being made from regrind.

Higher magnification does suggest something corrosive has been deposited on that record, noting the obviously melted grooves to the upper right side, and some fairly obvious deposits of some type of residual alkaline-like material in the depression and in the grooves immediate below the "hole". My guesstimation anyway....too nasty for me to keep and brutalize styli with anyway! :(

Even if not the answer....and it certainly could be..think of a hot seed sitting there burning unnoticed....definitely the funniest possibility....
