I was playing some used vinyl today and was being a bit lax on cleaning. A quick swipe with the brush and thought I was good to go!
As I continued to play, I began to notice an increasing amount of distortion! I kind of panicked at first thinking I had trashed my stylus or something. A quick inspection revealed the end of the cantilever covered with some crud, almost obscuring the stylus!
It took a bit of work to get the stylus clean, followed by a thorough wash and dry of the surface the record(that I should done to to begin with!). I still have an original Discwasher brand stylus brush,(I think SC-1 was the model#) and it works like a champ! I restarted the record and was relieved to hear a surprisingly pristine sound!
Now that I did this, I now know what not to do, and the results of bad care with the media and equipment!
Learned my lesson!
