DIY stylus cleaner (pad)

Post by VinylT » 04 May 2018 10:46

This morning I decided to make my own stylus cleaner (pad).

It works great for me, so I decided to share it with you guys.

You don't need a lot of stuff, the ony thing I bought was the Moon pads from Atom.
And I used a make-up container from my wife,.. 8)

I hope someone finds this useful,

Just a few comments:
A - Good photos =D>
B - Seems to work well =D>
3 - You must be playing very dirty records

Cheers

I took a stack of old uncleand records for testing.
And I’m not a pro on cleaning vinyl, and don’t have a high tech cleaning machine.
So tips on easy cleaning are welcome!

Well there is lots of advise here, some good, some not so good.

My advise is to mimic a professional RCM as closely as possible.

I use an old TT as a base for cleaning(deep cleaning of dirty records, not the usual pre-play dust removal), a home brew cleaning solution(used liberally), good quality record brush to work in the cleaning solution and a wet/dry vacuum with a felt/velour covered tool to remove fluid, followed by a final dry with a good quality micro fibre cloth.

I've been using a SpinClean. Not at all as expensive as the bigger ones if you're looking to save money... also, there's a thread about using 2in1 shampoo. Getting a new foam brush orpad, wet the playing surface, put an inch bead of 2in1 on, work it into the grooves, I let it sit for a couple of minutes, rinse it out with water (oh, by the by, this is a sink-job...), dry it with the microfiber cloths, one for first dry, second for final dry, and some will use ditlled as a final rinse, before drying of course.
The shampoo gets dirt down deep and the conditioner acts as a lube (it IS dry and not harmful) to play quieter.
Works for me...

I just went to my local store and bought a similar divice as the spin clean. Hope it works well.

Would you be so kind to tell me the name of the 2-1 shampo? I would like to give it a try.

The one I use is Suave's 2in1 Men's. The one in the dark blue bottle. I had it on hand and thought "eh, what the heck?"
I use it as my main clean up by for first washes (sometimes second, whatever it takes).
Read all you can, even the ones that don't like the method... the answers help understand the why's.
One of my better "what the heck"'s...

Nice job! I guess this is just about the perfect place for cleaning advice, and I have to admire the ingenuity of some of the DIY solutions like yours!
