Latest W10 Update Rendered my Scarlett 2i2 Useless

Post by Brant W » 18 Jul 2018 01:31

Hello,
Right after the latest Windows 10 update programs like Audacity and Acoustica no longer work with my Scarlett 2i2 analog to digital USB device.
While my PC and these programs still list the Focusrite I get messages like "An error occurred during recording" when I hit record.
Here's the info of the update.

Could it be the Driver update (listed in the capture) or did Microsoft change my settings again?
I've tried everything from updating and reinstalling everything to feeble attempts at turning off protection settings.
Unfortunately, Microsoft makes Windows Defender more confusing with each update so I'm not sure what to turn off.

Anyone else experiencing this?

You have the latest drivers for Scarlett installed: https://global.focusrite.com/downloads? ... arlett+2i2

Does it work when used through ASIO API? If not then
- Do you find Scarlett listed in Device Manager?
- When you plug the Scarlett to USB port ... does it get recognized ?

That driver looks like the built-in audio driver which shouldn't interfere with your USB Scarlett. But, since the audio update might have reset some settings, double-check that your recording settings haven't changed and that you're actually recoding from the source you think you are.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, my PC (and programs like Audacity) still recognize the 2i2.
I realized last night that while I lost my typical routine I can use the ASIO option after updating the driver.
The problem with this is Audacity doesn't support ASIO and Acoustica makes it very difficult to monitor.
I made a rip last night but and will compare it to a previous one.

Thanks, Hanuman

I'm assuming with programs like Audacity when I choose the 2i2 I'm bypassing all the crap like IDT Audio Control and stereo spread, bass boosting "enhancements"
I was just grasping at straws.

After some Googling it sounds like Focusrite needs to fix this problem as I'm not alone in complaining.
I'm going to look into the compatibility mode for Windows 10.

If you don't like Acoustica then have you looked other free alternatives as like these ones :
- https://www.wavosaur.com/

I love Acoustica...it's my go to for ripping since I like the RIAA curve.
I mainly use Audacity for editing and cleaning.

I'll definitely check out the other two you suggested in hopes I can monitor better.
cheers.

Does anyone know the cause of low bass thuds found in needle drops?
Could it be my newly installed copper Tip Toes or the latest arm adjustment?
Since I'm also getting a lot of low end rumble I'm thinking maybe my tone arm is adjusted too heavy.

Other changes I just made were replacing the sub platter with a Tangospinner and ceramic ball.
Could this be a fitting issue or an insufficient oil problem?

I'm only one third way through a pop and crackle cleaning and I already found two heavy thuds during the quieter moments.

If you're using a USB Sound Card, best thing to do is go into the PC's BIOS Setup and disable "On Board Audio". This will cure many problems.

The Tangospinner with Ceramic Ball only need 3 to 4 drops of Oil max.

Low Bass thuds could be down to Cartridge Compliance with your Arm.

You can use the tool here to check your cartridge and arm are compliant using the "Resonance Calculator" tool.

Cheers.

I should add that I got my 2i2 properly working again by using the Windows compatibility option.
Letting Windows search and find the old driver seemed to have worked.

Good one. This should never happen to me. My audio computer is a 2005 model PowerMac G5 running OSX Leopard. It can't be upgraded and I'm fine with that. As long as the hardware actually stays running I'll be happy running old software for that particular task forever.

Actually this is a real factor with computer audio hardware because the lifetime of the audio interfaces could be many, many years, well beyond the acceptable lifespan of the host computer. It's often the case that makers cease the software support well within the useable life of the interface. It makes a lot of sense to retire an old computer from daily duties and freeze it into a workstation that will never become obsolete for the job it's doing and that's what I've done with the G5.

Almost every time Windows does an automatic update something else stops working. The last major update made it impossible to log into my email via Edge on my main laptop. With Firefox there was no problem. The latest update of a few days ago fixed that.

And Apple are no better since they insist on a major upgrade annually (annual major software upgrades are a modern curse) risking extensive breakage and they never quite iron out the bugs before the next annual release.
