Thx guys ! The pictures on eBay were inconclusive on its cosmetic condition, so needless to say once I saw it in person it was well worth the 200 miles round trip.

40 YEAR OLD NEW AKAI. Yesterday an AKAI GXF80 cassette deck arrived , I bid last week on Ebay was willing to go to £150 but won it for £46 then agreed a postage price of £16, was advertised as sitting in a loft in original box for 37 yrs with all accessories The deck is in brand new condition and never used, the head still had its protective cover on, the door was taped closed for transit, and the separate mains lead has never had a plug fitted . I'm in shock
everything works as it should, only problem it was running a bit slow so I reluctantly opened it up to adjust the speed inside it is immaculate all belts look fine I'm still in shock :D It sounds fantastic my TDK tapes from the early 80's never sounded so good . I actually bought a GXF80 new in 1979 and loved it and abused it for around 8 years before it had problems, by then CDs took over. by the way STILL IN SHOCK

Hi thanks, just been doing a recording on a new old stock TDK SAX and it sounds excellent, the later tape formulations of the late 80's and early 90's show what these older decks can achieve and without HX PRO or Dolby C. I Have a house clearance find early 70's TEAC 260 table top 2 header that amazes me with its performance , and there both built like tanks.

Yeah, tanks... (you're welcome... #-o )
In my case, I've been finding out since I've upgraded to bigger/better (albeit vintage, now) gear everything seems to sound better. I didn't have the size if the amp/speaker combo to show what my Dual 1218 and Teac A-1200 could produce.

Oh, yeah...to crow for myself:
I took receipt of my Teac A-1200 R2R tape deck (one like I sold all those years ago...dum-dum-dum) and a Garrard DD75 turntable (yup, one like I HAVE...DD-I has issues and I liked the looks and sound of the 2M Bronze with it, so, eh...the price was good, made a better deal, got it.)
It shipped, tho with "some assembly required..." My eyes aren't happy...
Stay tuned for pics!

I took some photos of the Garrard DD75 and Teac A-1200 I got awhile back.
I thought the PS-X20 was packed!

Top, bottom, platter packaged separately (I assume this is the proper norm...I take note for future.

Hooked it up to the Test Kitchen (no guitar amps were hurt in this experiment...) and found it to be a manual turntable in every sense...the "go" button AND cuing lever must be held down to play... #-o
To be fair, I was aware of it going in...it was stated in the listing.
It sounds great (the 2M Bronze), but there's a slight waviness, speedwise...perhaps playing the daylights out of it, if it sat a long time, may loosen it up.

Then it was off to see my Teac A-1200 reel to reel deck...

I also knew going in that it had no case...it was less expensive (by far) and I figured I could find a case somewhere (make one, maybe? Unh, another project...hey, how about that ruby red metalflake acrylic like that Fender amp I saw awhile ago!).
Haven't tried it out yet, but will soon. I couldn't get over the packaging of the cord and random parts!

Kinda reminded me of the packaging that a certain Concorde STD came shipped in...made me chuckle  both times... Necessity IS a mother, yes?
If anyone has a remedy for the DD II's woes (cuing lever and start switch) let me know...I read something about these being common issues with this. I also believe they were addressed in VE. I'll dig, too. It'll be worth it.

Hey there, Dasher...That Teac is looking pretty stellar, even without the case...It was absolutely worth the price you paid and isn't it great to have a prized part of your youth back again? =D> You may want to take a look at this, too...They're making NEW ones, you know???

Some good tips here, if any of you guys are REEL newbies!

And more...

And you know how I talk about kids all the time doing great, amazing things...This young man right here gives me hope for the future of analog! And I'll take the hope wherever I can get it nowadays! :)

Don'tcha just love it???!

It's like I always say... did they ever leave?
(Vinyl's makin' a comeback, cassettes are making a comeback... well, true, the tapes DID stop being mfgd a few years ago...they SAID...)
And thank you, 'master for the heads up on it...it will be good once I get back to it...got a couple of projects and round-tuits to tackle in life

OK...had some time to do a quick look-see and test the Teac A-1200 I unwrapped last week...

The tape I had on (seems strange not to say "in"... ) was from work...some random session I could see using snippets for a grander mix.
All in all: vm, thank you for turning me onto this sweetie...I really am grateful.
For those of you that hadn't heard, I used to have this model and sold it when I "switched" to cassettes ("dum-guy, dum-guy, dum-guy..."). Came here, started missing it with all the vintage flying around here and pics and all. Ooonly a matter of time...(ironic and par for the course that an A-1500 shows up RIGHT after I ordered the A-12--...I think I would have sprung for that...of course...complete...oh whell...)
I love it anyway, it has a good home here at Dasher House...I'm thinkin' heavy on a red metallic acrylic case...mebbe medium- deep blue...
