I have zero scientific argument,BUT !
My CD player has more bass, the bass notes have better defined pitch and piano notes have more chime and detail with the readout light dimmed..There is also the option of on full or off..
I am talking about dimmed, not off..
I always switched the display to off..
I always felt that bass was a bit light compared to my vinyl playback and things a little more diffuse and vague..
I may find some unlikable quirk later on,but for now having A/B ed a fair bit..
I am thinking of using my CD player like this in the future..
I like the sound better,to me it sounds closer to my vinyl..
Better Bass,Better more Tonal Colour, percussive strikes sound less vague..
Piano sounds better..
I have not tried it on music with lots of instruments weaving about yet..
For Example,Tubular Bells..
Just put on another CD,,that Bass walking around on Jacques Loussier.
A Relaxing time guilty pleasure sounds so much better..
The thing about vinyl is,you can tweak different parameters until you like it..
Is there a colouration creating what I am hearing as all positive benefits..
I have no idea why this is happening,if there is anything to the display affecting the sound of a CD player, surely off would be the most logical way to way to go...

You should try this with your eyes closed, and have someone dim the display at intervals, and see..."hear"...if you can tell the difference. Kind of a single blind...hear...test.

Re: I have zero scientific argument,BUT !
I may try that,it is a good suggestion....
The difference isn't subtle though..
I am actually really happy,I wasn't that happy with my CD player before today.
No cable salesmen trying to bribe me to improve my bass by changing cables etc..
Other tweaks..Anything I have done is cheap..Which were before today..
This one cost Zero though,,my favourite type of tweak..lol
The bass is either full and present with well defined pitches,or light and vague..
Kind of,it is there,now it is away..lol
It is like the Fader with the Bass on it has been turned up in the mix..
Also as if the Piano actually captured by a better microphone for the Job/Mic Position..
Things sound cleaner and clearer..
I discovered it by thinking how it sounded good, better than usual..
Then realised the display was still on..
I thought, this will sound even better..
I switched the display off and it didn't sound better at all. :)

I have found, that mood, as much as any other aspect makes more a difference to 'satisfaction' or involvement than anything I can rationally account for. Psycho acoustic's man. Sometimes you dig it more than other times. CD though, overall to me though seems more two dimensional to me than vinyl, regardless.

Try my "blind" test. The mind can be very deceiving.

I believe that my CD player has the option to dim/turn off the display to improve the sound quality, although it's one of the options I've yet to experiment with.goatbreath wrote: ↑21 Nov 2019 13:04I have no idea why this is happening,if there is anything to the display affecting the sound of a CD player, surely off would be the most logical way to way to go... [compared to dimmed]
Regarding with your player dimmed and off giving the same sound quality as compared to the display being brightly on, I imagine that dimming the display gives the extra voltage (or something similar) that the audio circuit needs to sound better - it's making up for a deficiency, so any extra by turning the lights off apparently doesn't make a difference because the circuit doesn't need any more.

For a long time I have had a Musical Fidelity A3.5 CD player, it has a dimable display. Many times I have experimented with the setting and as go from full to dim to off...I believe I can hear a slightly sweeter sound.

Re: I have zero scientific argument,BUT !
I think it's a noise thing - Fewer things running causing less noise. On my player/DAC I can turn the display on/off, turn the digital out on/off, turn the optical reader on/off (when using as a DAC), and turn the headphone amp on/off. I've never experimented and I doubt it would be obvious, and I'm surprised you can hear a significant difference but who knows.
What player do you have?

I'm still waiting for you to try my blind test referenced above. Are you avoiding it, because you fear the results?

No I'm just out of hospital on Wednesday after spending nearly a week in there after having a heart attack,,then getting Stents/Angioplasty..
I have more important stuff to deal with right now than asking someone to come to my flat to do a blind test..

My apologies, goatbreath. I've been following both threads, but hadn't noticed you were the originator of both of them. #-o  I'm in Liverpool, and could pop over, but that's Liverpool, Pennsylvania, US, almost 14 hours, by air, so I'll let it ride.
Forget my test for now, and concentrate on healing and getting well. After that, you can think about it, and again, my sincere apologies.

Because of the shape of my room,it may be my friend has to stand..
I will try it in time, the main problem is that he is grumpy and lazy..lol
It is more a case of me being scared of the length of how long his moaning will go on..lol
I wish my room was bigger so people could enjoy my music collection along with me..
It isn't practical for me to have guests my flat is so small,so I usually go to theirs.. :D
