The accessories every record collector must own...

Take a look at these accessories that our friend Frank recently discussed...

I'll agree with every one of them and for the record, I use...

1. The Groovy Stylus Cleaning Brush and Cleaner from Bags Unlimited
2. A good carbon fiber brush, although I also have an old Discwasher or two
3. The Spin-Clean Record Washer and Spin-Clean Fluid, along with plenty of distilled water and spare Spin Clean brushes...
4. Microfiber cleaning cloths and a vintage Sound Guard Record Pad
5. Bags Unlimited's Polylined Inner Sleeves, which I stocked up on early (although the cheap paper ones are better than nothing at all...)
6. Bags Unlimited's 3 Mil Outer Poly Sleeves, although I like those sleeves from Vinyl Storage Solutions

So what do you think? What do you guys use? Would you add anything to Frank's list? :-k

Here's another video that goes into further detail about the various accessories out there...

Thoughts? :-k

what's with the 500 internal service error? is the server down, or are my privileges inadequate?

Why stop with a Spin-Clean record cleaner? I *think* I'd rather have something with a real vacuum in it such as the VPI or Record Doctor system....

disclaimer - I only have the original Discwasher and I don't think it's enough for the really grungy records

I notice the error, too...Not sure what's up there...

By the way, even if one can afford a more substantial record cleaning machine, an initial cleaning with the Spin-Clean can also be of great benefit...So, it's a worthwhile purchase no matter how you look at it...And if you have quite a collection, no matter what you use, clean records are a priority, especially if you go thrifting for vinyl as much as I do!

OK the server error seems to have been resolved (from my view anyway.....)

I agree - anything to make your records cleaner is a move in the right direction.

Additionally - a center-spindle weight (or clamp) - they don't cost all that much, and as long as you don't have a changer system, they're easy to use....

this is a "necessary accessory", right? I just bought one....

Regarding the weights, I think it depends on the turntable you're using...I have a few changers, too, so they wouldn't be necessary in my case...Frank had a thought or two on those, as well (at least, the Groovewasher)...

I would advise, though, to get a spare headshell for any turntable or record changer in which you might want to play some 78's...It's a PITA to keep changing those cartridges and styli to accomodate the different types of records...

I bought one of these, because I tend to buy boxes (ie, someones collection or partial collection) when I can find them. It's amazing how much schmutz they remove.

Can I clean with a spinclean/knosti/etc ? Sure, it's just not as easy or as fast.

I don't think an RCM is a requirement, but they're nice. I'd actually recommend a manual one first too. Besides, then there's the whole cleaning rathole in general....

They work. They're just not as efficient as a wet clean. But they do work.

They've been around for decades. Yes, they work for neutralizing static on the record surface, that is their function and nothing more.

I've had an original zerostat. I've never noticed a problem with static playing records, so it hasn't made any difference. However, there have been some records (extremely rare) where there is so much static on the disk that they are hard to take out of the plastic inner bag, it's like they have adhesive keeping them together. Zapping the record with the zerostat and zapping the inner bag with the zerostat eliminates all static and the record slides in/out of the inner bag like silk.

BTW, I've never tried to play a record with that much static (always zap them before playing when I notice the static) so don't hear static when playing them.

I thought my list would be short..lol
I don't Moth as much as I should,my sore back plus it is a pretty tedious process..

1..Moth Cleaning Machine.
2..20% isopropyl 80% distilled water mix.
3..Old plain cotton T shirt Material as cloth..
Fluid and cloth is how I get rid of fingerprints before I use the machine, works a total treat.
4..Inner Sleeves.
5..Calotherm Impregnated Anti Static Cloth,I let it drag on top of the moving record.
I think most folk use a carbon fibre brush instead,I prefer my way..
Harder to get Calotherm cloths these days though..
6.Stylus cleaning Brush.
7.Stylus Cleaning Fluid.
8.Scales.
9.Spirit Level
10.Magnification.
11.Decent Protractor..
12.Hifi News Test record..
13.Other test records,but that's me..
Phasing,Channel identification,levels etc..
I know an anti Skating band isn't accurate, but if the arm isn't swinging violently inwards,
It is at least some type of indicator..

14.I sometimes use a Tonar sweep arm,I think they made them a bit short though..
If you connect up the wire..I think they can help with Static..

I don't know what happened to my Zerostat..
I had no idea they were so pricey till years later..

I have an original Zerostat, from the late 70's. It was quite popular thn. Worked well for it's intended tasks, and still does.

So, Frank did a Part Deux with five more "Record Essentials"...I would not argue with a thing on his list here! All good options! =D>

^ You can use a Magic Eraser to clean your stylus too. Cheaper than that gel stuff and just as effective, some say even more effective.

Frank might throw an improved record mat (like leather or cork) into his list. Maybe that's coming in Part Tres.
