Can my cork slipmat scratch my records?

Post by dc_laffpat » 22 Aug 2018 17:26

So I just got a Taz slipmat with a psychedlic design on it, but for whatever reason I'm really worried that the printing will scratch my records. Am I just worried over nothing or do I have cause for concern?

Here is the slipmat I have: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0716 ... UTF8&psc=1

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you slide your hand across the mat, does it feel scratchy?
Hmmm. Staring at that mat rotating might be ... ?

Cheer,
Alec

For the record: Slipmats are what DJ's use to allow scratching and other DJ things. Platter mats for high fidelity playback are designed so the LP does not slip. They are not "slipmats".

FWIW: Nothing labeled "slip mat" will ever grace one of my TT's.

I like my plain old cork turntable mat. I mainly play 78s.

I use a cork mat and I've never had an issue. Mine doesn't have a pattern printed on it though. I do like that one.

I see the manufacturer calls it a slip mat. I would be afraid of any product where the manufacturer is unable to use proper terminology. I would like to know if the black portions touch the record, or is it indented or raised? If only the cork portions touch the records surface, I would be okay. If the black parts touch, it would not be on my platter. Cork is naturally antistatic and will help hold the record to the platter and by itself is a decent platter mat material. You can do the same by going to the craft store and buy cork sheets and cut to size. My local craft store sold me a 4 pack of 12" cork square sheets for about 10 Canuck bux.

If the black part is a dye, which would make the most sense, it shouldn't change the properties of the cork other than making it black.

When I worked in radio and on the DJ circuit, slip mats were made from felt and were slightly asymmetrical ......never found any made of cork. :D

No reason in the world that your mat would harm your records in any way. You might want to consider a soft rubber turntable mat. The rubber mat will insulate your records from any rumble, motor noise etc. that your turntable might be making.

It will also prevent slippage while playing an LP. You don't want the LP to slip/slide in any way.

If the manufacturer calls a platter mat a slip mat, they couldn't give me a mat. I certainly wouldn't buy one from them.

English is such a non-specific language, I just overlook such things.

Regardless of any language differences, a slip mat is designed to allow slippage of the LP. Only DJ's want this to happen. Any sort of mat an audio enthusiast (audiophile) would be interested in would be made to eliminate any slippage.

That's why I'd never buy a mat from any place that called it a slip mat.

Wow, that "platter mat" (for want of a better name) certainly has a "far out" design! I would want to put a record on it ASAP before it hypnotizes me :-)
