What about the qty 20 x 766 Ampex reels that also came with the deck? Might they also be bad?

I wonder if Ampex would make good on it, as a token of good will. ampex.com

...Also I come to learn the tape grade on it is considered the poster child for STS.
Could you clarify what "STS" is please, I'm not familiar with this abbreviation. Thanks.

As a matter of interest, Ampex left the home recording business, mid 1984.

Ampex became Quantegy. SSS was an issue for some of them too. There was a site that I can not find right now that actually listed tape stock with SSS right down to batch numbers and dates going back to the 1950's or earlier. It might have been on the Tapeheads forum.

Standard rca connecting cables. Nothing fancy. Plain vanilla.

This was one of the better reel to reels of the mid 60s.

Probably this one: http://richardhess.com/notes/formats/ma ... ing-tapes/. But in fact, SSS is related to polyurethane-based binders that did not exist in the '50s. OTOH there are other degradation modes that affect tapes of that era, most notably the vinegar syndrome that destroys film and acetate tapes, so a list of degraded tapes, especially older tapes, cannot be limited to SSS.

Had a sweet setup back in my 20s: Dual CS714Q TT, Teac X7R reel to reel, Allison One speakers & …
The Dual & Teac are long gone.

Started getting back into vinyl now that I’m retired. Got a sweet refurbished Dual 701 TT.

Listening to those old classic rock albums has got me thinking about getting another reel to reel.
Yes I know its likely to be a money pit. Any suggestions?

Allison One's were great speakers, and still are if refoamed.
