Re: Why Is Modern Pop Music So Terrible?
WTF was that? It certainly was not music .
It sounded like some bad 2 second industrial second sound sample in an annoying infinate loop.
mu·sic
ˈmyo͞ozik/
noun
1.
vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion.
This sort of rap has no "beauty" or "harmony" so, it is not music by definition.
However, some may say that it has an "expression of emotion"
Yes but, screaming is agony over pain is also an expression of emotion, but is is never considered music by anyone... except maybe a sadist.
The question that begs to be asked is, what sort of person loves this kind of rap?

Again, "Why Is Modern Pop Music So Terrible?" is the title of this thread...That one is a perfect example worth dissecting...The only one I can think of at the moment that trumps that is this...JDJX wrote:WTF was that? It certainly was not music .

194 million views on YouTube and counting! And yet, there is decent music that gets no views at all! SMH! #-o [-(

All these video's being thrown up are perfect examples of why my musical foray's tend to go back in time rather than keeping abreast of the current status. Yes of course there are smidget's of good material being produced. But, as pointed out in the original video there seems to be a trend of technology and a shift in the music industry that stifles grass roots innovation and compensation for music writers that leads to this commercialized, computerized homogenization of pop music. What ever mood or emotional content that is portrayed within these examples save Pharrell Williams breakout Happy hit, (which used simple elements of good old soul music) come across as contrived junk food equivalents. Empty calories. I'd love to experience another resurgence of blues music to occur. It's occurred twice in my lifetime, the 60's and late 70's and 80's. The influence of that simple music form and all root's music has always had a positive effect on the rest. It keeps it real. This stuff today ain't.

While I agree that there is a preponderance of rubbish music on mainstream radio, good music IS being made and released. You just have to work to find it. I have been a follower and supporter of MIT's station, and have compiled playlists for most of the last several years of the best stuff I've heard. If you're open to independent music, I'd recommend these playlists I've curated. Like I said, it's out there.

I don't know...I hear a lot of 50's rock and 60's soul in much of today's popular hits.
None of it would appeal to any diehard fan of those respective genres but it's out there none the less.
A few off the top of my head are Megan Trainor and Bruno Mars. There are others, my daughter would be able to throw out a few, I'm sure.
I think it's a hoot when kids think what is popular today is somehow new and unique.
But this is another symptom of old fuddy duddys (sic)
thinking what they grew up on is somehow the "real" music.
The ol' Blues and Gospel guy just can't stomach that new fangled Elvis the Pelvis fella.
The Bop guy just doesn't understand what they see in that Coltrane caterwauling stuff.

There has always been some bad music . "Surfin' Bird" is just one example but, even that is meant as comedy...just a novelty record. :)
However, now complete rubbish/noise that is supposes to be taken seriously has become almost the norm.

I may be excommunicated hereabouts for saying this, but I love Surfin’ Bird. In moderation of course.

Re: Why Is Modern Pop Music So Terrible?
Yeah but, all those examples are just novelty /comedy records and no one ever considered them examples of serious music... no even by the teenyboppers who liked them.... just for their novelty value.
This is in contrast to today where even the most offensive drones are considered mainstream serious music by some.

Music is "the Universal Language". Its destruction as a language is deliberate and orchestrated (sic). People who assert that this decline in quality is a consequence of crass "commercialism" and the influence of "corporate bean counters" need to explain why this decline (over the best part of a generation now) exactly correlates to the decline in sales and profits.
