Fred,
Your post makes me wonder; this topic about modern popular music being so bad...maybe it should be modern popular radio stations don't measure up.

BTW, wife and I became FUV members about 2 years ago.

See Dennis pretty regularly taking calls during his show @ FUV and yes, time travel back and forth as a member and listener......
If you mean WFUV 90.7 from Fordham university....

I just tuned into that.
However , unfortunately I get a very weak signal (with much static) in my area .... which is about 50 miles up the Hudson from NY city.
They must be a fairly low wattage station as I receive some other NYC stations quite clear... with my indoor dipole.

It's a shame as most of what I did hear, I liked.

I have three answers for you, Fred, that contradict that scheme, although these three may be anomalies in an otherwise sad past decade...Keep in mind that grocery stores play a lot of sad, break-up music (Think Tegan & Sara "Goodbye Goodbye" or Sam Smith's "Too Good For Goodbyes", for example...) because it helps them to sell more emotional comfort aka FOOD, especially things like wine, beer and all the bad-for-you snacks...People buy more when they're depressed and you tend to GET more depressed listening to depressing music...But, not all of it is depressing...Here are three examples of the alternative...

Example #1...

I should add that Pink's song is also inspiring...with a little extra depth, too, at the same time...

One just had to watch the season finally of "Saturday Night Live" last night to see and hear summed up what is wrong with much of today's music .

Nicki Minaj was the so-called "musical" guest.
She can't really sing, her "songs" were just bad raps, she had a stage full of dancers just for a desperate attempt to give her some semblance of an act.
To add insult to injury, the audience enthusiastically applauded her.

It seems like the much of the world in now being dumbed down and music is just another thing that is racing to the bottom of the barrel.

The "phenom" known as Nicki Minaj can be summed up in one song...If you REALLY want to dissect some lyrics, listen to this, totally on the other end of the spectrum of those earlier examples I posted...

Now, THAT'S Shakespeare for the modern set!

Maybe I'm giving her TOO MUCH credit, though... :-k #-o
