For me, it was Meet The Monkees which my parents bought me. The first album I bought myself and it was in a grocery store of all places was Canned Heat "Boogie With Canned Heat"...We're talkin' a long time ago :D

Yes I do. It was a 45, Misaluba by Cayan, the b side is Louise (my little ship).
Misaluba has an African flavor, plenty of bass. The price sticker says $1.45. That's New Zealand dollars in late 1972, I would have been nearly 13 years old.

Album was Ride a White Swan by T-Rex and single was Slades Coz I Luv You, so early 70's

Still got the slade single but the album has vanished along with many others when my brother left home, although he denies nicking them (Well he would say that wouldn't he)

The Kinks 'All Day & All Of The Night'/'Gotta Move' on Pye was my first 45 and the Island sampler 'Nice Enough To Eat' was my first LP, for the princely sum of 14/6d.

The first 45 I remember buying was Free "Alright Now" and it was bought at the Los Angeles County fair way back in the summer of 1970.

I think it was my sister's cast-off, monophonic, original-release 'The Original Monster Mash' LP, which I still have.

Soft Machine "Third", their third album, a very jazzy double LP.

For some reason, and for a short period, I only considered instrumental worth buying.

Next purchase was a Jimi Hendrix album.
That was the end of the original instrumental-only idea!

My parents gave me "London Calling" with the Clash, i had an intense clash period. Actually, they also gave me Enya, and the Annie soundtrack (musical) amongst with many others i didn't really care for :P

The first record I bought myself was aphex's "selected ambient works", if you don't count "records that looked funny" on flea markets and such, never found anything i liked at those...
