Vinyl Collection - What is it worth?

Postby Ed89 » 10 Jan 2017 19:58

Hi, I'm not sure if this is the right place or not but I just inherited a vinyl collection from my grandmother and I'm trying to figure out what it is worth. There are about 52+ vinyl and I know that what each is worth is dependent on more that just the title of the album but I was wondering if someone could ball park it for me. There may be a few that I want to keep but I don't have a vinyl player and I'm not into most of this kind of music except the classical stuff. Anyway any help would be greatly appreciated. The list of records are:

The Beatles A Hard Day’s Night – Original Motion Picture Sound Track
Something New The Beatles
Twist and Shout The Beatles
Beatles ‘65
The Beatles Long Tall Sally
Creedence Gold
Led Zeppelin – zoso
The Rolling Stones – Goats Head Soup
Mozart Mania – Woldo De Los Rios
The Genius of Ray Charles
Otis Redding The Dock Of The Bay
Solid Gold Soul (Two different ones)
the doobie brothers what were once vices are now habits
george harrison dark horse
solomon burke king solomon
Antoine
the jolson story you made me love you
Beethoven Ode to Joy
beethoven fifth symphony
the fabulous style of the everly brothers
peter paul and mary
tchaikovsky mitropoulos
The Band
Beatlemania
Top 16 Hits Westport Canteen
Thick As A Brick
The Sorcerer’s Apprentice Fantasia Sound Track
Welcome Friend – Sekon Tewatonro
Tchaikovsky – Pathetique Symphony
Simon & Garfunkel - Bridge over troubled water
This is the Moody Blues
Classics Up to Date 5 – James Last
The Association Greatest hits
John Tjenvers Greatest Hits
Johnny – Don Costa
The Jolson Story – Rock a bye your baby
Gene Pitney’s Big Sixteen
The Best of Liberace
This is Soul
Chicago
Band on the Run
Vivaldi The Four Seasons
Prokohev Symphony No. 5
Ormandy Philadelphia
Dvoraks Greatest hits
Mendelssohn’s Greatest Hit’s
Paul McCartney - Venus and Mars
25 Rock Revival Greats
Annette Sings Anka
Otis Redding – Live in Europe.
The Moody Blues – Every Good Boy Deserves Favour
25 Rock Revival Greats Vol. 2
Will O’ The Wisp – Leon Russel
Tommy – The Who

I really have no idea how to go about selling them, if I should just sell them as a lot or sell them individually. Any advice would be great!

If you were living in my area, I'd say take the albums to a record show and try to sell them to a dealer. I don't know what the market situation is in your area, though.

In my inexpert opinion, multi-artist, "greatest hits" compilations -- like the stuff you used to see from K-tel -- won't fetch anything. Couldn't say for certain about other stuff.
Null-point alignment theory merely lays the groundwork for tests that never occurred.
I doubted your conclusion. I didn't run over your dog.

Contact some record show dealers in your area. You could also list them as a lot on Craigslist. Expect an offer of 2 to 3 bucks apiece.

Try to sell them in a online vinyl marketplace. Record Dealers will give you just a few bucks

Try using https://www.discogs.com.

They have a good database and will show prices of records sold on their market place.

I've noticed some items on Discogs going for better prices than I see on other sites...I have found it to be very useful in finding those rare or obscure albums...Of course, I always peruse a variety of web sites, to be sure...

Discogs has been good to me so far...Fair for the buyers and for the sellers, I think...Otherwise, if you're not willing to take the time and list them individually, selling them for one lump sum on Craigslist might be your best bet...You could always list them here, too, with prices, if shipping them out wasn't a problem...

It is worth whatever level of enjoyment you get in playing them. That's really what it's all about.

It really is worth trying to find out which pressings you have, especially if they're in really good condition. You never know if you're sitting on a small gold mine. It's worth checking out.

When i buy a lot, i buy it as jeddy.. Not cherry picking'n as many others do. I paid 2$ each and thats all for a lot of up 1k LP, and was sometimes well satisfied and sometimes deceived with a good average deal on all.

Your grandmother was a special one if she listened Beatles and Moody's. If she need money it is not a regular deal i suppose.

52 records is not going to net you very much money. Craigslist usually has collections for sale and I've picked up boxes of 50 +/- for around $25 per box.

The value is not selling them in bulk, but rather individually. If the vinyl is in excellent condition, the price is, of course, better. Try and track down a copy of Jerry Osborne's "Original Price Guide to Records." It may be OOP by now. I have the 11th edition (and I've had it for a while now).

I'd like to point out that most of those records sell very cheap, a dollar or a few. It's probably not worth it to go through too much trouble. But at least with the Beatles albums, Zeppelin and Solomon Burke, check which pressings they are and what condition they're in. Discogs has pictures of different pressings.
