Back to the classical records after a long hiatus. This record is a replacement for one that had inner groove distortion caused by groove damage.

Found this copy at the local charity store and had a quick exchange while in line to pay for it:

Lady: "you still buying records?"

Me: " This is Glenn Gould's performance wtih Leorand Bernstein.... and although you could hear it on Spotify or youtube, this is the original recording on Columbia, "six-eye" pressing..."

Lady: "......." (just a bovine stare)

Nice score.

For me tonight it has been a weird journey of stuff I picked up in the Netherlands and Princeton over the summer.

Started with a CBS recording of various Boulez and Varese pieces.

Followed by a Finlandia lp of vocal pieces (featuring Ritva Auvinen) with piano. Pieces by R Strauss, Grieg, Sibelius and Rachmaninov. Also features Finnish composer Yrjo Kilpinen. Finlandia is one of those great labels that always has great music on it.

Last record is an Erato lp of Puccini choral music. Never seen this but maybe of the pieces sound like choral pieces found in his operas.

Quite the trip.

Many years ago I picked up "The Winter Legends" at Olssons Books in Washington DC.. and really enjoyed the "Wagnerian" quality of Arnold Bax's compositions. This particular recording brings to mind epic 'tone poems,'
which may have inspired many Hollywood movie soundtrack composers...

Wow nice record. A real Lyrita. Lot of those I find in the US are the HNH re-issues. Still good but not like the real deal. I am a Bax fan as well although the cycle I have is the Chandos one from the mid 1980s.

Went back to the copy of the box set that I did a complete play of a few years ago. I am sure this one will give me less trouble. I am fed up with the one that has the bent corner on the box. The other copy also has some issues. Perhaps finding a sealed one might help, maybe not.

Went back to the one I started with. Tried the one in my closet as well, but didn't want to increase stylus hours by starting over. I will simply record the current set and do my best digital cleanup. When I can't do a good job, I will get a different copy of that side. 'Nuff said.

I need to get to Volume Seven.

Finally decided to use the last really good copy of the box set I had. This one actually contains the best records out of the first two copies I had. The worse ones in this set were swapped with the better ones that were in the box with the broken hinge and more worn front cover.

I have decided against this copy in the end. That leaves me with the last one that had an undamaged box. I think I will use a different brush for cleaning the records.

Making lunch before play begins. These are the copies of the records I will play. Tired of restarting. These never were touched by any stylus of mine. Cleaning each with the Osage nylon record brush before play. It lasts for far more cleanings than the other brushes of mine and might be safer on them.

Made a decision to just redo Side 3 from the last copy I bought then play the last record. Finished with Volume Eight of the Haydn Symphonies until the cleanup efforts. On to Volume 7, Symphonies Nos. 20-35. I will post a picture when playback begins.
