Did a small listening test to be sure that the flute in the Minuet from Orpheus doesn't distort when it gets loud.
Hi, I wondered if you could explain why a high pitched loud flute would distort in one copy and not another? Is it simply down to wear of the vinyl, or is there some inconsistency in the manufacturing process that accounts for this?
It is a phenomenon I have noted on one or two different records and I am curious to know if there is an explanation.
Depends on cartridge setup unless the record has groove damage. In the case of the one I mentioned, no audible groove damage.

Yes, both records were some way off mint unplayed condition. Thanks for the help.

The first two green and white label copies of that record I mentioned had several surface scratches anyways, one of which had only feel-able hairlines and the first one I got had some deeper marks. Not the third one I received, which is in far better condition with almost no visible marks and nothing that can be felt. I'm starting over with the albums anyways, due to having to readjust the cartridge setup. Got some advice from Alec124c41, which resulted in me getting the cartridge square in the SME 3009 Series III headshell. Readjusted the base of the tonearm so that the cantilever was aligned in the protractor. The sound has improved even further.

I just did a check on the alignment of the cart one final time. It sure is aligned as far as I can tell.

On to the first of the classical records.

Time for the oldest Albinoni Adagio album of mine. Unfortunately the Adagio developed a scratch recently. Must live with it.

Since my cartridge is set up properly this time, no turning back with the vinyl. Going forwards from here on out. When I get past the first fourteen albums, it's on to two Pachelbel albums (Musicalische Ergotzung, Hexachordum Apollinis and Chaconne in F Minor), then two with music by Mouret, Lully and Delalande. This is followed by Rameau, Corelli, Albinoni (no Adagio on any album), Vivaldi, Telemann, Handel and Bach. There's even more beyond their music I will be listening to.

Speaking of Pachelbel, that was the oldest vinyl album recording. Now for the famous one. This is a rare first edition. It will be the final time the record gets any play. This is a special copy that belonged to Harry Halbreich, who did liner notes for Erato Records. I will search for a personal copy to get with this label variant. If found, this one will go high up in my closet away from other records. It will never be given away or sold.

The Pachelbel Canon will be heard again sans the midsection, this time along with the Gigue. Also to be heard again are the Albinoni Adagio (no exposition repeat), the Bach Air, the Purcell Chaconne in G Minor, and the Bach Ricercar a 6. The only pieces on this record that weren't on any of the previous albums are the Bach pieces Fugue in E Major and Badinerie in B Minor.

Piatigorsky/Munch Dvorak Cello Concerto. Tempo is a little faster than I like in First Mvmt.Still a very good version.
