Your favorite TV theme music

Post by BMRR » 18 Nov 2013 03:29

This relates to music but not specifically to records, so if the moderators wish to move this thread to the Off Topic forum, I'll understand. :)

What is your favorite TV theme music?

If I had to pick just one all-time favorite TV theme, it would have to be the theme from The West Wing. The version that they used during the first season was not that great, but they re-recorded it with a larger orchestra during the second season, and I think it's absolutely breathtaking. Listen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JivPEYjYd20

Some of my other favorite themes, in no particular order, are:

Moonlighting: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5BuVUbkNvw

Family Guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IJTO1_hfwE

That Girl (final season): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zoh1LGADKI8

The Price Is Right (original): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13tnjh3dZw4

Star Trek Voyager: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtVXAugaSm0

The Golden Girls: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KiQzUEc_FmI

Matlock (first version): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONKi-dShzSs (unfortunately this clip gets cut off a few seconds before the song ends, and I don't like the version that they used in later seasons... ugh)

An old roommate and I went on a Miami Vice bender one summer and watched all the episodes on Netflix. I was fortunate (?) enough to have found both the first and second editions at the local thrift shop. Every now and then I'll put on my Ray-Bans and give them a listen. #-o

I happen to be a big fan of the old TV shows, too (got many of them on DVD, too!), but I always loved the funky 70's themes...In fact, here are a few examples of what I mean...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNUkFMqvFIM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=geheKbxDR0g
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UoVN_0RdQAg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6ZB4tQqWlQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O20Sljxmy9M
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L09qnRfZY-k
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evly0OnAtPk (A live version of this one!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pjJ-TlnHF0 (And the Henry Mancini version!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8x0XeCIAIxU (I had the Hot Wheels bike for this show when I was younger...Should've kept it, too! Even for Fleabay!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0EzLaDlIPos
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqXB_zrJdKo (The original opening credits)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VlGyMG0ksg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xG7Qwv23sg (Not so funky, but somehwat classical...an orchestral theme, who'd have thunk it?)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAwagCwJj-g
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zo6caNX1e84
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rs-1GH5rH0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECGQ3pPT2PA

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Pt3hXw_X4A
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyyXeyww854

Then, I always thought this one was the most unusual...Something slower when everything else was so fast-paced...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCfn3aY5vUw

The most poignant one? This... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1d4C1ZQKmw4

And this is my all-time pick for one that SHOULD HAVE BEEN a theme song...Very 70's, ain't it?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZiiJLPs5Z8

Please go do yourself a favor, and hunt down the Hugo Montenegro album, "Hugo In Wonder-Land" from 1974. Nice stuff!! A fine piece of wax if I ever heard one!

See... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbV4TEMe7BI

I'm sure I could think of more, but these are pretty representative of the 70's, don't you think?

Any of that bring back memories?

Oh, by the way, I have many of those TV themes in their 45' and LP incarnations. They were often longer than the versions used for TV.

My Favourites are "Dad's Army" and "All Creatures Great And Small". And, you know what, I've just been watching them on our televisor here!

I'm a long term fan of the Prisoner and can forgive the theme music some of its bombast. Although it is credited to Ron Grainer it was significantly beefed up by Patrick McGoohan's input.

Did anyone mention these shows?...WHERE THE STARS WERE THE CARS!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GT26lSDAv8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f888Adpjc08

and one of my favorites of the 80's that had a lot of muscle...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZDRAlrgK-c

And a few more favorites...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNl9M5TxGC8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-m5J10e2Rg (I somehow remember this as a kid watching some Canadian television)

I also remember this show fondly...And I'm a sucker for a great classic instrumental theme!...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeUhrLoMIYo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WI4UBk0ICGc (This was the full vocal version of the instrumental theme...I have the 45' of it somewhere, as well as the LP soundtrack)

But the prize for the most stately, most elegant theme music known to man is...cue the music please, maestro...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypZT4lQHoK8 (Rousing, ain't it?)

Ah, the 80's!! I wish the last two instrumentals were longer, though...
