I've been listening to the original Harry Manfredini movie music soundtrack for Friday The 13th Part 1 (new from Waxworks Records). I'm currently listening on my Technics SL-1900 TT with AT 440mla cartridge. I'm running through a Marantz 2270 receiver (fully rebuilt by yours truly). Audio provided by a pair of Monitor Audio BX5 tower speakers.

The BX5s are new and I wasn't sure what to expect. This is a fantastic album to really test a set of speakers, as well as the accuracy of your listening setup. It presents a full orchestra sound stage, and uses the full dynamic range.

Even though the AT440mla and the BX5s only have about 10 hours of play time on them, they sound fantastic. The performance of the cartridge doesn't surprise me a bit, since I have them on at least two other TTs.

The BX5s, on the other hand, really impress me. I've stated before my preference for B&W and Monitor Audio speakers on a previous post, but I try to be impartial. I do have a pair of Monitor Audio B4 tower speakers. Though I do sell speakers and all types of restored vintage stereo gear in my shop, I won't let the B4s go, as they have a sound that is unique and I like listening to them.

The BX5s are every bit a unique sound of their own. The unbelievable thing is that they can deliver deep, accurate, and impressive bass without overpowering the midrange. When you first look at the size of the woofer and mid drivers, you wouldn't believe they can do what they truly do.
