Who remembers Erroll Garner?

Post by vinyl master » 29 Nov 2019 04:15

This is an interesting story I just read...

https://variety.com/2019/music/news/the ... 203413083/

A real pioneer in the industry, as well as being the writer of the classic "Misty"...I have quite a few of his albums, including the great "Concert By The Sea", "The Most Happy Piano" and "Other Voices", among others...A jazz legend and history maker that more people should know about! =D>

High vinyl master,

I am something of an Errol Garner Fan. Many years ago when I wasn’t much more that a teenager when we would visit my lovely and sophisticated cousin’s house I would head for the console record player which they had and play their copy of Concert By The Sea. I still love that record. I now have my own copy.

I was not aware of the story which you linked. Thank’s for making me aware.

A story which I did hear is that his high school music teacher feared that if he learned to read music it would somehow adversely effect his huge natural talent and therefore discouraged him from learning to read music notation. If the story is true or not I don’t know but it blows my mind.

Nice article. Seems, Erroll wouldn't sing along with Mitch and let the money mongers dictate his career. The judicial system is still as unfair today as then.

'Concert By The Sea' seems to be a common denominator and one I play a few times a year.....

Always associate Errol Garner with 'Play Misty for me'. . . Great movie for it's time.

My copy of 'Campus Concert' should see daylight more often 8)

I discovered Garner rather recently. As with most music I know from those times, it was a junkyard find: https://www.discogs.com/Erroll-Garner-S ... se/3568292

I put it on and my jaw dropped - that man's good! Never heard about him before, but turns out he's very well known. Hope to find more of him someday.

Great artist. I even enjoy listening to his histrionics à la Keith Jarrett and Oscar Peterson. There's something pretty awesome about hearing the creative process outside of the creation, within reason.

I do, and from the first time I heard his unique piano style, I would never forget him. EG is a true legend...

I've always been a fan of Erroll Garner. I have 31 of his albums on vinyl with a lot of them on the early 6 eye Columbia or Mercury labels, thus quality recordings. It would be hard to pick any favorites because everything he did was outstanding. IMHO
