Under rated LPs due to "one hit" track. Which ones do you have?

Post by Gravitar8 » 23 Jul 2019 13:37

I'll start things off with Dexy's Midnight Runners... we ALL know the 'hit track' but what about the rest of this fantastic LP? It plays like a concept album. It is moody, intense, sweet, rocking, jazzy and everything beyond and in between.

What LP in your collection is known for a 'hit track' but is in fact much greater than that?

I find the Proclaimers ~ Sunshine On Lieth is a very good album of folk/country/pop fusion.

Sunshine On Lieth is best know for the hit "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" and to a lesser extent "I'm On My Way" but the entire album is worth a listen.

I tried!

Went through a chunk of my vinyl dataBase and had to admit that I have not the slightest idea.

Sorry. Don't even know who Europe is.

Seriously, I have no idea what songs are hits or not for most of my collection. I do listen to the radio in my car and I do hear songs that seem to be playing all the time but, in most cases, they are not anything I want to have so I don't even try and figure out what they are...

I own a Judy Collins album that has the hit, 'Both Sides Now, but I don't know if she had anymore hits off of that album or not.

Cool. That explains the hit but what about the other tracks? Why is this LP under-rated? Production quality? Snappy tunes? or???

Wildflowers doesn't have anything else that could really be called a hit. It did help spur the nascent careers of Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen in a big way. The Cohen songs appeared on that album before Cohen had his first album out.

Okay, so then, I guess it is an underrated LP then.

Golden Earring's "Moontan" is known for the mega-hit "Radar Love" but it's a great rocker throughout. I would highly recommend. For that matter, most of Golden Earring's early catalogue is pretty strong but never got a lot of airplay, at least here in North America.

There are many others that fit your subject matter and I may add to this thread later when I have more time.
