It should have been a hit!!

Hey guys...I know you listen to records as much as I do, but has it ever bothered you that a b-side sounded better than the a-side of a 45' but only the a-side became a hit? :-k Also, what about those album cuts that never got any airplay due to record company politics, economic woes, poor promotion or any number of other factors that decided what got played on the radio back in the day (the "payola" scandal, for example...)??? Have there ever been any songs that you wish had been given a second chance on the charts??? A good friend of mine informed me recently, for example, that a rare tune from Whitney Houston has been storming up the charts in Europe partly due to it being used during the U.S. Women's World Cup win...I knew about it for a while, as I am a Whitney superfan and it's release only as a bonus track on the Japanese version of "I'm Your Baby Tonight"...Check out this new remix of the song with Kygo...

I seriously want to see that hit #1 now!! 8)

Funny how the bonus track original was a rarity on YouTube months ago and now the remix is everywhere!

Another song that I've known about that was not a hit was a b-side to the Jackson 5's "Mama's Pearl"..."Mama..." became a #2 hit here in the States, but the b-side, "Darling Dear" (a cover of a Smokey Robinson & The Miracles tune), featuring a great bassline from Motown's go-to bassist James Jamerson, should have made a bigger impact...Listen for yourself! 8)

Those two got me to thinking about other tunes that never hit the charts that should have been bigger hits...Keep in mind that I am a huge Top 40, pop, funk, jazz and soul specialist, although I dig all kinds of music...You guys might be more into rock, country or other genres...Maybe you guys have a few of your own "secret treasures" to share here...By all means! =D>

Maybe let us know, too, where to find your "treasures" (b-side, album cut, etc.), in case anyone wants to hunt them down!

In the meantime, I thought I'd share some of my favorites that never saw the light of day of any Top 40 chart (at least here in the States), but should have!! :D

First up is an album cut from The Outfield...Their "Voices Of Babylon" album is great from beginning to end, but only the title track became a hit at #25 (U.S.)...This is one of their other album cuts that I really dig...

I also have this 45' from a group known as Hot Rox...It's the perfect summer anthem, but strangely enough, it did not hit the charts here...

Here's one from the pop rock duo The Stabilizers...It did hit #93 on the Hot 100, but it should have gone bigger in my estimation...

I recently picked up their "Tyranny" LP and it's a good one! 8)

Here's one from Deacon Blue that was a Top 10 hit in the UK, but it could have made a name for them here in the States...

I'm a big fan of Sheena Easton's, too, but this track from 1982's "Madness, Money & Music" was but a footnote to the album's bigger hit, "Machinery", which was a bit of a footnote itself, compared with her hits "Morning Train" and "For Your Eyes Only"...

One thing that was not a footnote was the fact that she did an early version of "Wind Beneath My Wings" on that 1982 LP, well before Bette Midler got her hands on it...

One of my favorite bands over the years has been the great Kool & The Gang! I love these guys so much! The early stuff, the funky stuff, the JT years, all of it! The title track of their 1984 LP was not a big hit ("Joanna" was WAY bigger!), except in the UK and Ireland, where it broke the Top 10! Too bad no one else was listening! :(

You rarely even see it on the "Greatest Hits" comps, but here it is! =D>

Another favorite from them comes from their "Something Special" album...That one featured the big hit "Get Down On It", but this album cut is also a favorite! 8)

Here's one from the Pointer Sisters that hit #52 in 1980, but should have done better...

Could be that the sound is too close to The Jacksons' "Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)"... :-k

Still, a winner in my book! 8)

Speaking of The Jacksons again, this one from their "forgotten" album, "Destiny", is a beautiful ballad and a showcase for Michael's smooth vocals! =D>

This one was a rare one for MJ and a bonus track on his boxed set, but I think it deserves "one more chance"! :D

Cathy Dennis was a favorite on the charts, since she hit it big in 1989 (on a collaboration with D'Mob called "C'mon and get my love"), but by 1992, her star had waned somewhat...I think her 2nd solo album, "Into The Skyline" was great and featured a couple of songs that should have been bigger hits than they were! Take a listen!

I guess the world was over the velvet jumpsuits by then? :-k

Kenny Loggins had a lot of major hits, with many of them from soundtracks, but I thought this duet with El DeBarge from "Vox Humana" should have gotten more traction than only hitting #88 on the Hot 100! :D

Can you hear the radio possibilities of any of these? :-k

Anyway, another specialty area I am into is the phenomenon known as Northern Soul...One guy that I've discovered in recent years is an uncanny soundalike for Teddy Pendergrass...This tune by Bill Brandon should be more well-known, but alas, it's not...

Chicago's own Chi-Lites were well-known for their hits "Oh Girl" and "Have You Seen Her?", but this one from 1982 should have been huge in the clubs...

Maybe it was too old-school 70's by the time of Michael Jackson, but it's still a favorite! 8)
