Removing Sticky Residue from Record

Post by mr_ray » 20 Apr 2019 01:50

So I just git a nice rare old Japanese record yesterday in pristine condition, and like an IDIOT, I set it down on the sleeve while screwing around with changing headshells. Unfortunately, this sleeve was the type with those %$^&ing sticky flaps, and it was open. So now I have a big sticky stripe on side 2. I ran it through my Record Doctor V with AI#6/MOFI brush a few times, and then tried spot cleaning with the Record Doctor brush, and it's still there.

help This is an expensive and rare record.

Try Goo Gone. It's safe for almost all surfaces. I've used it on TT dustcovers.

You could also try Uni-Solv. It's safe for use on skin.

I did a test with solvents a few years ago to see if I could hurt records either visually or sonically, only dry cleaning fluid did any damage the rest did nothing. White spirit or turpentine will remove your goop and then clean with isopropyl alcohol afterwards. Neither will hurt the record, I soaked a record for 2 weeks on turpentine and it did it no harm and it will get your goop off for sure.

Thanks, everyone! I found on old can of something called "Goof Off" under my sink, so I'll give it a try today.

Probably should have tested on something else first. Record appears to be destroyed. Great.

Throwing away all adhesive flap jackets now.

I don't think I would use a petroleum based cleaner on any record.

In the future, rubbing alcohol will take off most sticky residue, so will basic cooking oils like, olive oil will break down the glue then just wash off with whatever record cleaning solution you use.

Some glues just wont shift and white spirit will remove most that wont budge with anything else and my tests showed that long periods of contact did nothing at all so a one off clean to remove the glue wont be a problem.

m_ray,

Sorry about the vinyl, was going to suggest:

1. Fantastic
2. WD-40

Oh well, next time :-k

Fred
wd40 is mainly white spirit with oil added.

When I saw "goof off" I was thinking"NOOOOOOOOO", that stuff will melt paint off surfaces, "goo gone" on the other hand is very mild but would think you would then need something to remove the goo gone since its got an oily residue.
