Favorite "Ladies of the 80's"...

Postby vinyl master » 06 Sep 2018 06:28

Hey guys...I work with a guy who is heavily into the 80's music...That is one thing we both have in common...He was a college radio DJ and still returns to his alma mater for alumni weekends to put on a show every year...We got into a conversation about who our favorite female artists of the 80's were and I thought I would submit my "Top 20 List", in no particular ranking order, mind you...The ones I had a crush on, the ones where I had to have EVERYTHING they ever put out, the ones where I saved up "lunchbox money" and pennies and dimes for weeks just to buy their latest album! Some of these may be "guilty pleasures", but I'll stand by every one, so here goes...

1. SADE
2. ANNIE LENNOX OF THE EURYTHMICS
3. WHITNEY HOUSTON
4. BONNIE TYLER
5. GLORIA ESTEFAN
6. SHEENA EASTON
7. PAT BENATAR
8. HEART (ANN & NANCY WILSON)
9. PAULA ABDUL
10. JANET JACKSON
11. CYNDI LAUPER
12. ARETHA FRANKLIN
13. CORINNE DREWERY OF SWING OUT SISTER
14. ANITA BAKER
15. LAURA BRANIGAN
16. SUSANNA HOFFS OF THE BANGLES
17. KIM CARNES
18. STEVIE NICKS
19. CHRISTINE MCVIE
20. OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN

Remember, I'm NOT talking about the BEST OF ALL-TIME, but just the ones I dug in the 80's...This is certainly a subject for debate and the question is loaded, but I personally think Madonna, Cher and Tina Turner are overrated...I will, though, give honorable mention to the rest of The Bangles, The Go-Gos, Juice Newton, Bananarama, Basia, A Taste Of Honey, Donna Summer, Brenda Russell, Randy Crawford, Expose, Patti LaBelle, Suzanne Vega, Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders, Joan Jett, Holly Knight, Animotion's Cynthia Rhodes, Bonnie Raitt, Rindy Ross of Quarterflash, Elizabeth Wolfgramm of The Jets and Tuesday Knight (an obscure one, but a favorite nonetheless)...

I will defer "All-time" status to ladies like Karen Carpenter, Gladys Knight, Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, Petula Clark, Lulu, Chaka Khan, Dionne Warwick and Jennifer Holliday...

And I will say that my dad thought highly of Barbra Streisand and Celine Dion...

Soooo...What do you guys think of my list? Would you guys agree with these or are there others that I'd missed? :-k

What are your favorite female artists from the 80's? =D>

Who are YOUR "guilty pleasures"? :)

I see a few on your list started their career earlier than the 80's but may well have come to prominence in that decade - so here are a few more I remember from that time and have in my collection (and I agree you should include Kate Bush)
Debbie Harry,
Joan Armatrading,
Eddi Reader,
Tracy Chapman,
Sinead O'Connor,
Diana Ross,
Lisa Stansfield,

Vm, you put Aretha on your 80's list instead of deferring to "All-time?" imo her best stuff was in 60's & 70's, and certainly an All-timer!

Kate Bush above all for me for 80's. Guilty pleasure would be Sandra, including the Enigma stuff. All timer, definitely Billie Holiday.

Definite yes to these ladies....Kate Bush, Chrissie Hynde, Pat Benatar, Debbie Harry and Anne and Nancy Wilson. A host of others possible of course, but regularly listen to these and continue my adolescent crush on them. Sigh..... :D

I did that because I really started getting into her around the time "Freeway Of Love" came out and then the "Who's Zoomin' Who" album...That made me go back and find her "Aretha's Greatest Hits" album...Still, one of the best collections of music I've ever heard in my life! :D
