Anyone own any pocket discs?

Post by vinyl master » 30 Jun 2018 17:29

I have a few of these...

31180
31181
34581

And recently, Jarrett got a couple, too...

The guy who sold me the last three above also had the Pocket Disc player! So, just curious...Any of you guys ever come across these things in your travels?

If you like to own at least one of every kind of record, they are worth checking out! =D>

Is that about half the size of a regular 45?

I've never seen one personally.

I'd say roughly about 4 inches in diameter, Tink...The 45's are 7 inches...

They are still really cool conversation pieces...Record shows and online dealers seem to be the places to find them, but I couldn't pass those ones up when I saw them cheap!

I've never seen these before. I'd never even heard of them. Where would someone get those way back when?

You could probably buy them for 69 cents at your local Woolworth's or some other such entity...Here is some more information about them, if you're interested...

They are not the best-sounding by a long shot (Why do you think they did not catch on??? :-k), but some like the Beatles ones can be quite valuable! :D

Hi Vinyl Master,

I have never seen one of those pocket discs, but if one comes into my hands I think I'll be able to figure out how to play it.

What I do have are some Little Wonders and their competitors. A Little Wonder is illustrated below between a compact disc and a CD:

These records appeared in the late teen years and early '20s. These records sold at news stands for about 15 cents when regular 78s were selling for ~ $1. I think the mainstream labels cut their prices in response and the little records went away.

For budget acoustic recordings these records can sound remarkably good.

My girlfriend owns a small disc, about 5 inches big, by a band called Man Or Astro-man?

It is different from those pocket discs I think: the label has the same size as that of a regular 7", making the playable vinyl surface very small. It plays at 33 rpm.

That is so cool!! I have never seen those small disks, no idea if they were USA orientated or sold all over the world.
The question arises: what is the smallest record ever?

Ah! And I may just have the answer, Keesie! While Drew mentioned the 8ban records shown here...

I think I can do him one better...Check out these "stamp" records from Bhutan! They might just blow your mind! =D>

Great story behind those, too! :)

Oh, and in case anyone was wondering about the LARGEST playable records, I might have to go with Jarrett again on these...

And you call yourself an AUDIOPHILE, Vinylmaster....?Just kidding.
Here the smallest ones ever. Endless summer by the Beach boys and The Great Buddy Holly. The sleeves are 2.3x2.3 centimeters.

Ha! I learn something new every day! =D>

Question is...Are they playable??? :-k

Now, the Bhutan stamps ARE playable, but in case any of you philatelists (aka stamp collectors) didn't know this, Bhutan's record stamps were not the ONLY innovative designs they produced...Bhutan produced the world's FIRST lenticular (lens-shaped) stamp, the first stamp smelling of roses, the first bas-relief stamp AND the first metal stamp, among others... :D
