Problem with Sharp Optonica turntable

Post by lvii_vinyl » 14 Feb 2018 04:48

Hello all,
A couple of months ago I found an old Sharp RP-104 Upright Turntable, which I have noticed there is very little information about it on this site.
I have tried to use it but there is one problem, the belt on the belt drive may have snapped. The rest of the turntable works fine, but the records are not playing. I was wondering if anyone on here knew how to replace the belt on this turntable since I can't find a way. I have attached an image of the turntable below.
Cheers,
LVII

Hello LVII, welcome to vinylengine.

It is indeed pity, that there are not so much information around in the www about those interesting turntables. But here is a very detailed and helpful post, about how to change the belt:

How to Repair / Service

It shows also, how to do some other repairs and adjustments.

This is about the Sharp Optonica RP-114H, but as far as I know, it is nearly identical to the RP-104H.

Best regards.

Thanks for the Help themisto! I had seen another post about this turntable that said you basically had to take apart the whole thing, but this seems much easier than that!
Thanks again,
LVII

Update:
So I have just opened the turntable up to try and remove the belt only to find that the belt has melted into some greasy substance! This isn't too bad of a problem, but I just want to know if anyone knows how this could have happened.

Belt "melting" into goo is common for any belts after a dew decades.
It's a chemical breakdown and deterioration.
It's a mess to clean, needing special solvents that don't harm plastics or metals.
The same thing happens to old tape decks.
And every speck of goo MUST be removed!

Hello all!
A new problem seems to have risen regarding the site given by the website above. I have tried to order the belt only to find that they do not ship to the United States. If anyone knows of a reliable site that can ship to the US then that would be very helpful.
Thanks again,
LVII

Go to www.thevoiceofmusic.com for their wide selection of belts.
Gary's helpful there.

Hello again,
I have gotten a new belt for the turntable and it works fine! Yet, of course, there is another problem with it. I have hooked it up to my pair of speakers but the music plays too quietly. If anyone knows what to do in this situation, that would be very helpful.
Thanks again,
LVII

Turntable to AMP (with phono stage) then to speakers.

Hello LVII, if you run your turntable with active speakers, you will need a phono pre amplifier.
