I've enjoyed my Dual 606 for the last couple of years, but always wanted to try an idler drive model. The 606 was needing a service, and I saw a 1229q that was restored for pretty much what I would have paid to service the 606. I bought it, along with a Shure M91 ED a couple of days ago, and have been quite impressed. I'm going to figure out how to add a little oil from time to time, and generally do what I can to keep it working. It's heavy, but not quite as heavy as my Toshiba SR 355.

A couple of weeks ago I found this Dual 1219 on the local Craigslist-type website. It was in a bit of a state, very dirty and noisy. Which is why it was very cheap. So I gave it a good make-over, replaced steuerpimpel and capacitor, cleaned and lubed the motor and bearing, the works. It purrs like a kitten now. Well actually it's virtually silent.

A previous owner put it in a home made plinth with some nice veneer, which I had to restore and spruce up a bit. It didn't have a bottom cover so I made one out of 12 mm thick, very hard and very heavy Trespa, and reinforced the plinth with six wooden supports (corners and sides).

I found a NOS aftermarket Nude Shibata stylus for the M91 cartridge, and it really sings now. The stylus looks a bit cheap so I printed a little 'Shibata' sign an glued that to the stylus holder. Just because I can, you know...

It did come with a dust cover, but someone cut out the front panel (it probably sat in a cupboard or something) so it was looking pretty awful. I had a custom, clear acrylic cover made for it, which arrived today. I have to say it makes it look a lot better, pretty classy if I may say so myself.

The one problem it has though is that it won't stay up. The person who made it failed to follow the original design with cut-outs and rounded corners in the back. Trying to solve this now. Hoping that will end well...

Dust cover has now been fixed, so it will stay up properly.
