How to open Dual turntables for servicing

Post by JaS » 22 Mar 2010 08:05

As this subject comes up fairly regularly I've decided to make this post a sticky

https://www.vinylengine.com/images/forum/dual_721.jpg

(a) Loosen transit bolt and tilt sideways to release chassis from the base unit *

(b) Transit bolt screwed down into top plate - the turntable is now spring supported position required for playback

(c) Screw transit bolts fully upwards to lock the chassis to the base for transporting unit

Regards,
JaS

* always disconnect the unit from the mains supply before removing the chassis

How do you think about a video?

Need to open a Dual 1257

Post by vinyldancalifornia » 11 Jun 2010 18:07

I have a Dual 1257. Seems to work pretty well but there is something loose inside the case. From the kind of sounds I hear when I tilt the case from side to side, it might be the short manual spindle, which was not in view when I got this unit; currently using the auto spindle.

I watched the video here (very nice!) for taking apart a similar model and saw what I should do with the transport screws from that and other info in this thread. Even though I can tilt the screws around, the main turntable works does not want to come out of the case. I don't want to force anything. Might I be missing something? I can't find a source for the user manual or service for this model (at least not one I can get immediately).

Any comments on what I should do next, or links to a manual?

BTW if someone in the USA has a manual that has a page or two that could help me on this (and is kind enough to spend the time) and has a fax machine I have a toll free # that takes faxes and voice mail; it will auto detect a fax. 888-549-3622.

Thanks!

Tip the screw so the bottom swings inward. Start with one side, then the rest are easy.

What about the plastic bodied cs 515? I have to replace my leads and it's got me scratching my head!

Thanks for the reply Alec but I can't see how to do it in the manual!

It's the same procedure for the plastic bases but the thickness and sharper edges of them can make it difficult. Try pushing the chassis down while swinging the bolts before lifting.

Hi,

Should I use the same procedure for the Dual 714Q? Can't seem to remove the center spindle.

Thanks

That's a direct drive, so you won't be able to take off the center spindle, which in fact is also the motor spindle.
So it can't fall down, when you turn the turntable upside down. You have to take the platter off, of course. The platter just has a hole, where the center spindle is, naturally.

How do I get the center piece out to take off the platter on a dual 506?

Think of it like a compass, with the machine in front of you, Top screw push it north to release the screw to the south, Bottom screw push it south towards you to release screw to the north. Right screw push right, east to release to left west. Plastic cased units that are sealed on the bottom are kinda hard to figure out the first time 'cuz you can't see what you're doing. It may take many tries to get one to pop out! I hope this helps someone.

Thanks to all for the info on how to open a Dual deck and how to get the switch to work - great stuff! I just sorted out my Dual CS505-2 which has been faulty for a year or 2 (!) My suggestion to help get the deck opened - follow the advice above, but with the platter removed shine a torch through the hole just north of the screw to see how to manoeuvre it - helps a lot.
