New Dual 510 owner

Post by Jomass » 13 Feb 2020 17:36

Hello All,
Just saying Hi.
I recently bought a dual 510 (CS 601 it says at the back). I hope I'll have a good time with it.
Right now I am looking to replace the Cartridge it came with (A ceramic CDS660 cartridge mounted on a TK182 headshell).
Once this gets solved, I hope to play some nice tunes with it!

Not too difficult a cartridge to find ,surprisingly.
Ebay has a few listed now.
Good luck. The 510 is a fine table. Many other cartridges would be better though.

Welcome to VE and the Dual Forum. =D>

If you look on the auction site they sometimes have TK-14/24 headshells that have the factory MM type cartridges affixed which area already factory aligned. They may need a new stylus but would probably be cheaper than buying a separate headshell and cartridge.

If you wanted to go the separate headshell and cartridge route some here are recommending an AT95 or similar cartridge which perhaps they could add some recommendations on. If so it would be necessary to align the cartridge after installing the new cartridge.

Just as a reminder, all the CDS cartridges are ceramic types which don't need a pre-amp.
When switching to a superior moving magnet type such as the AT95, the sound system will require a phono preamp, if it is not so equipped.

Unless the Dual ceramics are different, you can't usually 'just' plug such a cartridge into a typical 'Aux' input as the loading is far too low. The UK ceramic types I have here (SAcos, Sonotone and a Ronnette Stereo 105) all need 1M - 2M as a load to get a flat (ish) response.

So in a way one is screwed whatever option is chosen ;)

The 510 can take all manner of good modern cartridges. I've said my piece ad nauseam, so good luck whatever you decide to use ;)

I had the Dual 510 in the seventies. It came with the Shure M95 cartridge which is very good (and it is for sale on the bay - germany). I sold it in 1981. Not the smartest thing I have done.

Definitely ditch the ceramic cartridge. I am surprised to hear that it was mounted on this Dual. Good luck.
