1211 to 1216 upgrade for Sony HP-510a

Post by WizardWG4 » 13 Feb 2020 16:21

Hello All,

I'm hoping to get some guidance on upgrading a Dual 1211 to a 1216 in a Sony HP-510A console system. The stock turntable is a 1211 with a 4 pole motor. I have it running well with an Audio Technica AT-3600L set at 3g but I would like to swap in a 1216 I recently picked up in order to give me a wider range of lighter tracking cartridge choices.

The Sony 1211 has an external microswitch mounted next to the switch/terminal box. The 1211 also has the flat and straight switch linkage running under the motor. The 1216 I have has a different (KS-3) switch/terminal box with an angled switch linkage running under the motor. I recall reading a post from dualcan that mentioned Sony added this microswitch due to the added current running through the switch to power the amplifier when the player is in auto-shut off mode. My questions are:

A) Is it a straightforward swap to change over the different switchbox, linkage and microswitch over to the 1216?

B) Would there be an issue running the 1216 as is in the Sony with the stock KS-3 switch?

Hi,
The Sony changes on the 1211 was due to local (Japan?) regulations. There is no problem running the 1216 with its KS3 power switch in that Sony system. If memory serves, the Sony power switch adaptation was the use of a micro power switch, which was also mandated later on by UL and other electric boards. The open-able style power switch was later deemed too dangerous for what ever reason.
All the Dual powers switches have ample current reserves for incorporated amplifiers because they themselves had many compact units similar to Sony and co.
The 1216 is two levels higher than the 1211, which was really only conceived for Ceramic carts.
Regards,
k

Why not go full 1218, and have the best small chassis 1200 family Dual changer ever built? It will fit, and plug and play drop in. Any small chassis Dual 1200 family changer will work.

Hi,
Yes the 1218 will fit, as it is an identical mechanical chassis with the 1211, 1214,1216. The main differences are the tonearm, motor and platter.
You most likely will have to remove the stand bracket beside the motor containing the RCA connectors, as it might protrude too far into the electronics.
The 1218 is the top of the line for the small chassis, but for the sound level of these compacts, the 1216 or even the four pole motored 1214 is more than plenty. You will not get a better sound from a really expansive cart with a 1218 because the amp is not designed to that level.

k
