New Dual 1229 owner

Post by Steelratt » 09 Sep 2019 00:20

Hi,

I've been an on again/off again higher end listener for about 20 years. My latest setup I just got is a set of paragon JEM/Jubilee speakers with a Peachtree 150 driving them. I haven't had a turntable in 15 years, and when i did it was a simple sumiko with a blue point cartridge.

Today I managed to snag a pair of Dual 1229 turntables. One appears to be functional, the other not so much.

The working one starts fine. I was able to use the strobe to check the speed and it seemed okay. Everything seems okay, came with a Shure V15 type 3 (broken stylus), an Ortofon FF15 XE, and a Stanton 681 EEE II-S.

The other one has a running motor, but the platter will not turn. Also, once I hit start I cannot get it to move to stop without going under the turntable and doing it manually. Finally, the speed selector lever is broken.

So I have a few questions:
-Is there any things I should look at before running the working one?
-Is the wire with the red arrow pointing to it the ground? If it is I'll have to splice an extension on it.
-Should I have the cartridges checked out before using? Is it worth it to get the Shure repaired?
-Is it easy to repair the damaged table? I'm almost tempted to just sell it as the other one appears functional.
-Anything else I should know?

Thanks

If you have an album you don't care about, use it and see how things are working. Very likely, both tables will need cleaning and lubrication, but maybe the one that works has been in constant use and the grease hasn't hadn't had the chance to seize up.
Couple of things I noticed: In the first picture, the headshell appears cocked - it doesn't in the last picture - but if it is, that will need correcting. In that same last picture, it is impossible to see if the the stylus and cantilever of the 681 is in good shape, but if it is, that's a nice cartridge. The Ortofon and Shure are also, but the fact that it was on the working turntable might suggest it works and is better than the Ortofon - obviously the Shure wasn't in the running.

Fired up a Peter Gabriel LP. The Stanton and Ortofon cartridges seem to work well. There's definitely a persistent hum, and it makes some awful crackling noises through the speaker when the automatic mechanism is moving the tonearm. The mechanism DOES work though, which is fun to watch.

Any ideas on the hum and crackling noises?

Cleaned the headshell contacts, crackling when the tonearm moved seems to have gone away, but the persistent hum remains.

Did you clean the contacts on both the headshell and tonearm?

There is plently of information on the Dual subforum here, and on the Dualcan site:

Hi, here's my two cents over the last five years I have serviced well over 100 Dual turntables. And about 1/2 of them were either 1219's or 1229's. The only correct way to get any model of Dual turntables operating again is to do a complete service on the mechanism and motor. The grease used by Dual is now over 40 years old and it dries up and turns hard from age. The bearings in the motor are now bone dry and in need of cleaning so new sewing machine oil can be put back in to them. The steuerpimple and lifter ring need to be replace. The lifter ring is used in the single play / multi play mode for this turntable. Even if you never use the Stacking spindle the lifter ring needs to be replaced to protect the Deering rings "ears" so the tonearm can be used. If the "Ears" on the deering ring break the repair is very time consuming and a major PIA. There are parts under the beauty plate under the tonearm that also need to be cleaned of old grease. This means that the tonearm needs to removed from the turntable so the beauty plate can be removed and those parts cleaned lubricated with fresh grease. What I have mention is just some of the things that need to be done to these turntables. Less then that will only result in a turntable that is not working correctly and that can be very frustrating. If you attempt this service your self make sure you read the service manual a couple of times to understand how this mechanism works. Go to the dual sub forum on this site and read as many posts as you can about servicing these turntables and also check out Dualcan's web site for even more info.

Thank you for the suggestions. I broke down and sent it in to get serviced. i got them at a low enough price that even with the service cost, it’s still a bargain.
