help to repair PE 2020L

Post by goodweather » 17 Feb 2019 20:32

Hi,
just registered to this forum as I saw some topic on the PE 2020L but not answering my questions.

So, I have a PE 2020L but with 2 issues:
- the lever to move the arm up and down is not doing anything
- the turntable is not working in automatic mode
In parallel, I guess it will need some full cleaning and re-oiling/greasing.
I found the maintenance manual in english.

But let's take one thing at a time...

First solving the lever issue. I guess there must be something loose.
How do I open the turntable to access the mechanism?
Looked into YT but didn't find any video on that.
I guess I need to remove the plate.

Can someone tell me how to do that / point to some explanation somewhere?
Thx!

Hi Goodweather,
First of all, have you downloaded the Service manual for your 2020?
To do so, click on Library on top of this page and search for PE, then 2020. You will find a SM to be printed, which will be extremely useful for your restoration.
I restored one for a friend of mine in 2017, and you will find some info about it on one of my threads around that time.
The mechanism is quite similar to the Dual's, but more complicated.
On this forum, our Dual Guru Klaus Dualcan has a crunch on the PE models and will be able to help you too.
By the way, if you happen to be not too far from the Ghent or Brussels area, I could offer a bit of my little experience…
Cheers,

Hugh.

OK. I had them already except the operation manual.
Yes, I'm living close to Waterloo, working in Brussels but going sometimes to Ghent.
So, sure Hugues! Will first try by myself when getting some support by Klaus or you.
Btw, I'm french speaking but I speak also dutch.
Thx!

Hi,
Hugh is the Man for your 2020 restoration help If anything odd comes up, don't hesitate to post or pm. You will see that the stand he built is a real necessity for this complicated unit:

I usually like the item nrs. for the parts in question and seeing that you will meet up, it will be much simpler for the referencing of parts.
There are many levers that operate the arm so in order to avoid any ambiguity, the item nr. (2020 service manual page 20 ) is crucial. The best however is to see the unit directly!
PE changers are more complicated and alignments more critical than Dual units because of the diamatic tonearm control system.
Once you and Hugh have a look-see what's wrong, I'm sure that Hugh knows the proper corrective measures- He also knows where I live...
Cheers,
k

Thx to Hugues who accepted to take my PE2020L in his hospital :)

So what we did:
- open the beast
- general state is very good but it needs to be cleaned because the grease has hardened
This is probably causing most of the issues as some parts are then not moving by themselve or easy enough
- tried to understand why the lever commanding the height of the arm is not working.
All parts seems OK.
Hugues asked a friend to lean his PE2020L so we can compare them and understand
Could be again a grease problem (piston not going easy up/down or the spring
- we also discovered that the PE2020L was in a chassis of a PE2016 (small square). This is explaining why I didn't find any small PE2020L. It simply doesn't exist!
- and apparently I have also a very good cell (Shure V15 TypeII - correct me if I'm wrong) but the needle is to be replaced.

Of course, beside the PE2020L we had also very nice "man" talks about different collections, soldiers, books, vinyls...

Hi All,

My hair was silver already, it is now turning to white since I started on this table!
Motor now spins fine and as silent as a church mouse.
So far, all I could get was a perfect working manual table. All the seized elements are now free but I can't get enough pressure from the main lever to the (non existant) pimpel.
Hopefully I will find how to make the automatic functions work with Klaus expertise and help.
Will give more news later.
Cheers,

Hugh.

Sorry for the extra grey hairs!
About the arm lever, could you compare with the one of your friend and understand how come we didn't have enough force (spring or some broken part?).

Hi Goodweather,

Sorry for the delay, but I've been working on your beast for the last two weeks and got a few improvements.
Pressure is OK now on the arm but I can't make it work like it should: lifts up then sets down without moving to the record. Compared the cycle with my friend's 2020 and everything looks the same.
Took the tonearm out and replaced the pimpel there. Also found a pimpel for the main lever (150).
I know Klaus is away at the moment, but I will call on him again (had a skype with him last week). You are welcome to pop in and have a look next time you come to Ghent (you're a real technical engineer aren't you?)
The big problem on these tables is accessibility (two hours to remove and put back the main lever). Had to buy surgical "forceps" to handle the circlips: they helped a lot!
This afternoon, I had a big fight with the speed selector: this bl… little ball bearing is a real PITA to put back when reassembling! Thought Dual 1219 was difficult, but it's a child's play in comparison!
But I'm not giving up (yet)!
Will go on tomorrow.
What a challenge!
Cheers,

Hugh.
