Dual 1228, Good Turntable?

Post by Skizzam » 17 Feb 2019 12:09

Greetings, For my first post here I have a question

I've been given a Dual 1228 Record Player in fairly okay shape apart from lacking the actual cover.
I'm curious how this stands up to modern record players you can get at best buy for $100-200?

I know literally nothing about these so any opinions would be awesome. Thanks!

The answer is way, way better!

Anything you buy for $100-200 is throwaway junk that isn't very good quality and will be lucky to last 2 years. On the junk turntable the tone arm isn't going to be very good and the motor of poor quality.

You will need to do some minor maintenance on the 1228, but after that it should be trouble free for many years and last another 45 years! =D>

To get something modern of equal quality would cost you far more than that.

Thanks for the replies... Currently the arm doesn't auto-seat properly on the records but so far it works perfectly

The cheapest 'high fidelity' deck that would probably be 'quieter' than a 1228 is the Rega Planar 1. It's utterly basic and perhaps crude, but it works.

This old Dual has HUGE potential, but you'll need to be dedicated about bringing it back. I think it's worth it myself, but PLEASE don't butcher it in the restoration. Dualcan Klaus is everyone's friend here and Mrow2 Don can Help with popular parts and grease etc... along with a simplified basic service sheet that covers many models.

Download the manual for this from this site and learn how to adjust the landing. That Dual is much better than just about anything you can buy from today's mfg. processes, damn the price.

1228 is a great idler wheel turntable. One of my favorites! It's fine, will be fun to service it and own. Have a custom cover made.

I've just got a 1228 up and running on the weekend, I like it a lot. It's astounding how much the mechanism simplified between the 1019 and the 1228. The strobe is a really nice touch.

I have the younger brother, a 1226 and recently got a 1219 refurbished for my "vinyl mentor", a man who got me into vinyl big time...The 1228 is a lovely table and a great Dual...I've acquired five Duals in the past five years that I would put up against anything new out there...They are fun machines to own...Take your time and study the manuals...You can also look at our own dualcan's pics of his 1228 restoration, as well...

Whether you do it yourself or have the work done by someone, she's worth it! 8)
