Dual 604

Considering a 604 purchase. Anything to look out for in general, other than they are over forty years old. Seems like they are well built and not overly complicated.

We love our Duals! They love a wee bit of TLC. Good combination!

Mrow, Thanks. I'm pretty handy with tools. :) Eyes are definitely not like they used to be.
What cartridges work best with the 604?

I've had one since 1978, and basically it is pretty much the same as the 621 other than being semi-auto rather than full auto.

I believe mine originally came with a Shure M95ED, but I replaced that with a Shure V15 Type IV, then an Ortofon VMS20E0, but have used many other cartridges on it to good effect.

As Don mentioned after 41 years it could probably use a bit of basic maintenance such as cleaning off the old dried up lubricants and using fresh in limited amounts. If the steuerpimpel is worn out, that should be replaced. If the speed pot is erratic then it could possibly use some cleaning with contact cleaner.

All in all it is a fairly simple design compared to the fully auto versions, but very efficient and reliable. As they used to advertise: "Precision Makes the Difference in Performance" .

Tinkaroo, Thank you very much. I've seen your name and Don's throughout my research. :D I saw that the 604 steuerpimpel is different than most Dual models. Where would I find a replacement? My research also pointed to Don as a sourch of replacement parts (steuerpimpels) and maybe the proper lubricants. [-o<

You might want to send Don=mrow2 a PM, since he makes the best 'pimpels" whom I've dealt with and he is very helpful.

He also includes a Pdf copy of a helpful service guide with any purchases. he also sells small amounts of Alvania grease which is good to replace the existing grease with once the old stuff is removed. You really don't need a lot of it, and it is best to just use minute amounts.

You can also check out the service section here and visit Klaus=dualcan's website for more tips.

It appears the 604 does not use a lower pimple.
Hi Kevin,
I was sure that you were wrong in saying that your TT has no "steuerpimpel" and agree with both Don and Tinkaroo. We all were wrong and you were right. The 604 has no lower pimple but does have an upper sleeve/guide, not a pimple either. Reading the manual a few times, I remembered that this unit, contrary to almost all the other (Dual)automatics and semi automatics does not use a traditional main lever but splits the job of tonearm return between,
a: tonearm lift; done with the same lever as the cue lift lever 219 and
b: tonearm return movement done by the push action of levers 188/174
Since there is no traditional pimple then the problem I would think lies in the tonearm height / cue adjustment being too tight at first glance.
Look at Fig 8 page 8 in the service manual and find the guide 202 (it's the conical plastic guide/sleeve under the tonearm, right behind / near the vertical tracking adj. wheel) and adjustment screw 57 (directly under the counterweight securing screw).
To adjust:
Balance tonearm and apply tracking force as usual.
Pull cueing lever into raised position.
Distance between record and stylus should be between 5 to 7 mm;
adjust with 202.
You will still need 1 to 2 mm free play on the tonearm (headroom over the maximum 7mm);
adjust with set screw 57.
Let me know if this cures it!
Regards,
k

Tinkeroo, Thanks for the valuable info. :D If I get the 604, I will definitely PM Don for some grease and a service guide. Looks like the pimple won't be a problem. :D
Where exactly is Pixie Hollow? I went to Montreal in 2015 for the F1 race and in Toronto in 2017 for the Jazz Fest. Had a great time. =D> I also bought some music (Oscar Peterson) in Toronto from a store called Sonic Boom. 8)

Klaus is near Montreal and can tell you where to get the best poutine, Montreal bagels, steamies and smoked meat sandwiches. They also have a jazz festival.

Pixie hollow is in Nova Scotia on a mountain overlooking the Fundy shore.

The other shore from Oak Island.

Now your talking Tink!

The best poutine:
https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/ ... gK3F_D_BwE
But speaking totally unbiased of course, it started here in Sorel with the Fromagerie Riviera 8)
If you want to upscale that poutine to level 10, then Au pied de Cochon:
https://aupieddecochon.ca/en/info/infor ... gar-season is the place but bring two gold visa/mastercards...
Poutine Nirvana!

Montreal bagels, there is only one : Fairmount Bagels,:
https://fairmountbagel.com/
sorry St Viateur Bagel; lived on St Urban street long enough to know the difference.. Fairmount Bagels supplies New York and ships to LA for the connoisseurs daily with the best bagels--- period!
Hint: oignon/garlic bagel with a hint of unsalted butter, topped with Lachs and paper thin slice of oignon. Food for the gods!

steamies and smoked meat sandwiches. has to be Lester's:
http://www.lestersdeli.com/en/about.html
with a slight edge perhaps to Schwartz's
https://schwartzsdeli.com/
It's debatable...
Both had the atmosphere of a dump, surly waiters, with the latter charging extra you if you have the temerity of ordering a smoked meat sandwich without mustard... You will be on thin ice asking for lean meat already, so don't push it! The smoked meat however, is the closest to paradise.

They also have a jazz festival.
Nope, we have the world's greatest jazz festival with top performers coming here.
Here's a hint:
https://www.montrealjazzfest.com/en/About/LeFestival

All to say, come for the jazz festival, eat at Schwartz's one day, Lester's the next, then out to Sorel where we'll discuss which one's better, while eating the best Poutine at the greasy spoon!
Cheers,
Klaus

Now I know what Pavlov's dog must have had to go through after looking at some of your links Klaus! =D>

I've been to Schwartz's but luckily love mustard on my smoked meat, and Lesters is very good too.

That Pied de Cochon place looks like it would be worth a visit and their tee shirts look pretty cool too!

My keyboard is covered with drool, a real mess. Oh, geez.

Regarding 604 / pimpel Thank You; I have made revisions in all my notes. I believe 510 doesn't have one since it's a manual; it would appear that the semi-automatics which have manual lift and que to lead-in + auto return at end of play might use the same basic method of control. D

Don, Thanks for the update. :) Tinkeroo, you had to get Dualcan started. Now I'm hungry. =P~
Gotta get back to Montreal, this time for the jazz festival and to try out those eating spots. 8)
