So I added approximately two wraps of aluminum foil around the shaft to minimize the gap between the shaft and wheel. This significantly reduced the whirling noise, but it is not dead quiet. I'm wondering if I have been hearing motor noise all along that is being altered by the idler wheel.

I'd be inclined to see if organdonorparts have good used replacements for the bits that seem wrong on your deck (lots not listed on the site, so worth an ask). Dualcan has access to new-old-stock of many parts and Dualfred has others.

The shaft problem may have been exacerbated by long term (perhaps since the day unit was built) running with the idler out of alignment with the bracket and platter drum. Excess wear on that shaft may have occurred. Agree with DSJR, possibly just a new idler wheel or send it in to replacement service for exchange. The aluminum foil trick sort of points to this, but that is no solution by itself.
