Help, I have a Dual 505 and it needs work

Postby zachthomas1991 » 23 Jan 2018 16:55

Hey all,
First time posting. I recently inherited a Dual 505 turntable and I know its missing like half of the cartridge but I'm not sure what I need to buy to fix it. I will try to post photos.

Hi:

The contact strips that are hanging down on their wires slide up into a slot at the back of the headshell attachment point of the tonearm.

You also need a headshell such as shown below that gets locked into the tonearm. The pins on it will contact the part mentioned in the first sentence. The cartridge is fitted to this headshell with threaded nuts and bolts.

Download the manual for details on how the headshell is locked in or removed from the tonearm. Also the service manual may give diagrams showing where the contact strip is located on the tonearm.

Thank you for your reply. Based on the info you've provided and the manual, would I be looking to get something like this?

No, you would need a headshell like I've shown in the photo. I believe it is known as a
TK-14/24.

What you have is a Dual CS 505-1. Other 505 models have different style headshells that are removable. Be sure you're getting the right headshell mount for the CS 505-1.

It seems I may have indicated the wrong part in error, if so I hope that the OP can try to cancel his order and someone can hopefully indicate the right part to order.

I'm sorry for any inconvenience I may have caused.

I'm thinking this may be the correct adapter required, so can someone else please confirm it it is correct?

It is a nice affordable table. I ran one for years. Good machine overall if you stick to lighter cartridges.

Hang on a minute. Thats a 505-1

Tinkeroo has shown the wrong part there but his second picture link is like what you are after. Not identical to my adapter plate (which has a more metal plate) but it looks all the right dimensions and fitting

What you need is the adapter plate, a TKS 49 style cartridge or do the work to put a proper Dual headshell on it which isnt all that easy. There are other threads on here showing picures "swapping arm tube" 505 is one of them

Thats why a lot of these 505-1s get passed on or sold without anyone realising its going to take a spend on specific parts to get it going.

Dualfred in Germany are always a great Help and you will sort your turntable out.
Best wishes

You need to find how to fit the terminal strip back into the headshell - it doesn't hang down like that normally. I described how to fit the carrier here -

viewtopic.php?f=37&t=101919

- and there's a good pic of how the terminal strip fits. I don't have one of these so can't comment any further from visual examination - sorry...

Solid! Hey all, thanks for the replies. So I finally figured out how to get the terminal strip back in place. The fit in the very back under the head. The thing that holds them in place is the adapter plate which I was finally able to install. Now I have a needle/stylus (Its small and orange), but I don't have a cartridge (something to hold it). Are there any good starter recommendations?
