15 to 20 comercials in a row..........

Post by JDJX » 10 Oct 2019 23:02

Has anyone else noticed and become annoyed of the new trend on TV to have 15 to 20 commercials in a row, then have about 10-15 minutes minutes of program material, then have another 15-20 commercials? .
It is getting to be no more then ridiculously greedy of the TV stations... both cable and over the air broadcasters who grossly oversell commercial time.

Yep. It's grotesque, like so many aspects of our commercially compromised lives. I mute the sound for what seems a longer and longer length of time. I tend to watch more of PBS now.

Fortunately, there are only a few stations that go to this extreme.

Agreed, but also, the stations that are doing this, tend not to have anything worth watching, anyway.

I agree 1000% with the excess of commercials. I was laid up for most of last summer and I really couldn't do anything else but sit and watch TV during the day. The TV stations here that play the shows from the 50's,60's and 70's that I like to watch just plays the same commercials over and over and over. At least 8 to ten commercials every 6 minutes of show. It's so bad that sometimes you just forget what the heck you were watching :D . I do the same thing as the rest of you I turn the volume down or I just start flipping channels. It's so bad that I actually am paying for Netflix's now. But it's worth it no dam commercials. =D>

Cut cable a while ago...... =D> =D> so I can't say I've seen that many in a row..... :-k

However, OTA has become almost unbearable showing the same 4-5 commercials at all of the dramatic breaks. These same 4-5 commercials are played on all of the OTA channels at dramatic breaks. The worst part are the dramatic breaks basically happen at the same time for programming so there's literally no escape

Well, I guess that's the price of "free"....... :?

Also note that often, if you switch to an alternate station to catch up on something else, you will hit a patch of the same commercials.

Commercials account for about 32% of most tv programing. Remember when you used to watch a football game and between plays they would talk about football, well not anymore, as soon as there is a break in the game it's commercial time. For me if it were not for dvr, I would not have cable tv.

The standard used to be, 16 minutes of commercial time/hour. On many station, that standard has long been abandoned.

I have a lot of classic TV series on video dating from the 1950s onward.

-Shows from the late 50s such as Perry Mason were about 52 minutes of show.

-More recent shows which are syndicated such as Star Trek DS9 or House MD are about 45 minutes.

Basically we are getting about twice as many commercials time wise as we used to. Sit Coms running in a half hour slot only give us about 22 minutes of show.

Some shows produced for alternative networks such as HBO for example can have time lengths from 50 minutes to an hour depending on how big a story it is.
