Pioneer is half-inch mount. Technics is p-mount. That's why I suggested trying it the other way around with an adapter.

By the way, i forgot ... AT85EP would be fine.
I ordered the AT85EP but now I read that it’s specifically designed for linear tracking TT which the DD33 is not. Should I give it back?

No. It isn't. This series of cart is for any p-mount turntable. If you look at AT's website they spec it as such and even answer that specific question in the Q&A section.

You actually picked a good version ... elliptical vs. the much more common spherical stylus.

That’s how they describe it in the EU website:

Designed specifically for the linear format, the AT85EP features Audio-Technica’s unique dual moving magnet construction. The dual magnet system is combined with the para-toroidal coil construction to assure an excellent sonic clarity and wide channel separation.

May I add my 2 cents worth? Are you certain that the alignment of the cartridge is exact? Although the tracking force is important, maybe something could be off with the cartridge alignment.

You can’t modify the alignment.

On the site you specify, you can download the user manual of the cartridge where you will see that your AT85EP is suitable for all P-mount turntables. https://eu.audio-technica.com/resources ... 170720.pdf
I think it's better to trust the user manual.

Technics SL DD33 anti skate erratic

Post by chriz74 » 10 Jun 2019 18:20

So, this TT has fixed anti skate to 1.25 ... the tracking force of the needle is 1.25g. As you can see in this video anti skate is not working as expected. I removed the label that tells it’s fixed and I can see a round grey stuff with a notch but it doesn’t seem it’s adjustable.
What should I do?

By the way, the service manual tells the screw under the plate is for adjusting the automatic return position, not the anti skate.

I tested anti skate with a blank record and it’s not working. It can’t be adjusted. I guess if there is any way to fix this. The service manual doesn’t say anything.

Here’s a picture of the tonearm from the inside. Are these springs involved in antiskate?

I’ve come to a conclusion. The Technics SL-DD33 TT sucks

Post by chriz74 » 11 Jun 2019 17:22

Maybe when it came out in 1985 or something this TT kind of worked. However nowadays given that the antiskate is fixed at the factory and there is not any way to tweak it, as in my case, the AS is completely gone. Not working at all. No idea if you can replace some spring and fix this however it doesn’t make any sense even thinking of trying to do it. The TT always sounded like s**t so I had to dive into TT theory and I found that it’s pure madness. No wonder CDs replaced vinyl back in the days. When I was young I used to play my records on a philips GF 808 and later on a pioneer PL-2600, I never knew anything about AS, VTF etc, I just played the records enjoying them and thinking about nothing. Now with the new knowledge thinking of playing one has become a real pain in the ass. Screw you SL-DD33!

I had a DD33 for a while; it worked perfectly and sounded fantastic. I sold it to a friend who has been enjoying it for the past two years, using it daily, with no problems or issues.

I guess you never checked if antiskate was working at all. If you checked and it was then lucky you.

It worked perfectly. I've had about a dozen different Technics P-mount turntables and the antiskate worked flawlessly on all of them.

Doesn’t work here.
