AR XA belt size

Post by andrew678122 » 02 Jul 2019 23:45

I found this posted on an old forum:
All AR turntables from original through XB used the same drive belt. Flat, 23.6 inner circumference, .135 wide, .030 thick, PRB# FRY23.6. I think this belt may also be the same one that's used on the 1980's turntables as well.
Starting belt:
The starting belt for the two-motor table is Square, 6.7 inner circumference, .035 square CS, PRB# SCY6.7.
All dimensions are in inches (they hadn't invented the metric system yet). I don't know if it's correct but that is some info I was searching for. I was concerned that the belt I bought from someone on eBay was wrong, it just feels too tight, and according to that quote it's about 1/2" short...

If it feels tight then it probably is. I have bought belts from Vinyl Nirvana https://vinylnirvana.com/ and haven't had a problem with them. I also got one recently from Marc Morin. He sources what he has from another vendor but don't recall the name. Did you read that you should talc the belt before installing? Put it in a small plastic bag with some talc, shake it then install.

I was looking at the belts there, but he doesn't give any details, no equivalent part numbers, length, width, nothing. Then I searched on eBay and found this:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/112391059922
It looks like the real deal, all the same part numbers, size, everything.
Also check out www.russellind.com and their PRB line of components...

Well, if you bought your belt from that site you can certainly try it. Or did you buy a belt that you described as tight from someone else?

No the belt that seems too tight came from someone else on eBay and the listing said nothing about size which is what has made me leery about buying something that is claimed to fit but is not backed up by details.

Yes, you have to be careful. Where did you buy your pulley? I know that Dave at Vinyl Nirvana sells them. Like I said earlier, I have bought at least one belt from him without an issue. By the way, I have no affiliation with Vinyl Nirvana.

And, finally, don't worry about asking questions. I know I've asked plenty of them myself here and on other forums.

My new pulley came from Vinyl Nirvana and I'm completely satisfied with it. I should have gotten a belt at the same time, but before I knew I needed a pulley I needed a belt so I just ordered one from an eBay seller (Fits all AR turntables! 5 million satisfied customers!).

I have very little experience with turntables, and what I have is from almost 50 years ago. They say the only stupid question is the one that doesn't get asked.

An undersized belt will compromise an AR's performance pulling the suspension off center and increasing motor noise. Get a belt from Vinyl Nirvana and it will be correct. Have you talced the belt? Talc on the belt allows the belt to act like a clutch when starting.

Pulling the suspension off center is exactly what I have seen, and I've read about using the talc...

The correct size belt is a must. As pivot stated a tight one compromises the performance of the deck. Brings speed issues into play.

I looked at their shop on eBay, they do nothing but belts. Anyone looking for a hard to find belt should try here.

There are a lot of people out there selling incorrect belts. I hope this ebay store is not one of them. They sound legit.

Marc mentioned the belt spec in a thread at AK.

https://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php ... 567/page-2

Most belts that are sold are the wrong spec.
