Not irrelevant. If I can get rid of the 300Hz noise, I'll be interested in a cartridge upgrade.

Update: I bought and installed a new belt for the AR XA. It greatly reduced but did not 100% eliminate the 300 Hz motor noise.

Did you try to lube the motor bearing?

I oiled where the shaft comes out. Should I do something else?

Edited to add: I've realized that I oiled my other AR's motor. I'll do this one and see what happens. Thanks for the suggestion.

skandl: I got a major improvement from a new belt. Oiling the motor bearing may have made a minor improvement. I moved my discussion over to AudioKarma.
