Another topic about Rega hum

Post by TJKV » 02 Dec 2019 13:07

This weekend I noticed very low output from one of my speakers. Upon closer inspection, I also noticed a hum.

I tried every connection, and found out the problem was here:

Disconnecting and connecting again, and turning the plug a little, fixed the problem for now. But we all know what happens when you have to start fiddling with cords :x

Anyone had experience with this? Is replacing the whole cord the only fix?

If the jacks are not gold-plated, like those in the picture, if the amp is older and gets used a lot your problem might be due to corroded contacts - which can have the effect of a twist of the plug making the problem dissapear.

If so, replacing the jacks by gold-plated ones and also replacing the cable for gold-plated plugs will make the problem not occur again.

I had exactly the same issue with a Rega MM stage (latest model) It drove me mad. Rega even changed the Unit for me; guess what same problem.

After months rather than weeks, the connections on the cartridge were loose; this straight from the manufacturer on a brand new P2

I crimped them tight, now no hum whatsoever

Frustrating

It sound like the factory was in a hurry.
