Headphones

Post by TJKV » 16 Nov 2019 12:25

Hi all,

I have a P2, with a Fono MM MK3 preamp and active Audioengine A5+ speakers.

I'd like to be able to listen with headphones. Sadly, it seems the Rega Ear headphone amp is discontinued.

What would you guys (and girls) recommend in this situation?

Sony mdr-v6. Fabulous. Bought mine in the 80s for under $90. You'll probably need to replace earpads.

Thanks for the reccomendation, but I'm really asking about headphone amplifier options, according to my current setup.

Regards!

Sony mdr-v6
+1

Switched from much more expensive Sennheisers - very happy.

Unless you want only new, why not look for second hand Rega Ear headphone amp?

That is the main plan. But it doesn't hurt to have options...

You can still find it new at some internet store. For a price from $325 to $395

What headphones are you thinking of?

I use an Emotiva BasX A-100 with my high impedance(600 ohm), low sensitivity, vintage AKG 240 Monitors. This unit has gotten good reviews for use as a headphone amp with hard to drive high impedance phones. Perhaps might not be best for low impedance sensitive phones like Grados.

The A-100 does decent as a speaker amp too.

I'm leaning towards Grado SR80e or SR125e.

The Rega Ear is a great Headphone amp! I look forward to your decision.

I had one. The background hiss was quite noticeable, even at low levels.

I had to get rid of it in the end.

I can highly recommend the NVA headphone amp, will pretty much work with any headphones and is extremely musical.

Seems like quite a good alternative. Unfortunately, 475 pounds is a little over my current budget...

Anyone had any experiencie with this?

Only $99 and I've seen good reviews. But it also functions as a preamp, and I don't intend to replace the Fono MM anytime soon.

(Perhaps this thread should have been better in another section of the forum, I'm sorry)

The Atom amp is a line preamp, not a phono preamp. You'll need the Fono MM anyway.

Sorry for going over budget, you could always look for one 2nd hand. These are well thought of. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Schiit-Magni ... Swgsdd14iN
