Upgrading a Rega Planar 1/2/3 to play 78s

Post by rainoir » 23 Sep 2019 18:40

Hello,

I am sorry if this is a very newbie question, but I looked everywhere and could not find the answer.

I would like to know if the Rega Planar 1, 2 or 3 could be easily upgraded to play 78s. It seems like several things would need to be upgraded if that is possible, and I am not sure it would be easy to get back to the standard configuration to play again at 33 or 45 (that's why I am not considering the RP78 turntable).

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Someone did the opposite, which may give you some ideas. They look to have replaced the subplatter, pulley, belt and cartridge.

Thank you! This is indeed what I found, but I was surprised that I could not find the opposite.
Maybe I should indeed get the ideas of that opposite operation.

It seems like that switching between the speed ranges (33/45 and 78) would be really hard. Maybe I should look into some other (high quality) brand that would make it easier.

New Technics 1200 and 1500 have all three speeds and good reviews

Hi, If you are uk based, Ben Lamb at fidelitydesigns.co.uk might be worth speaking to. A fantastic guy to deal with who makes 1st class components for just about any system. He always answers any questions I have had and his prices are very good imo. I just received a reference sub-platter from him & I couldn’t be happier.

A Rega is not a very good choice if you want to play all three speeds on the one deck.

Rega have built dedicated 78 turntables. I'm sure if you asked them they might supply you the parts to convert your deck to 78 but not a deck that plays all three speeds. A deck that played them at the touch of a button would be better but also a deck that had an arm with a removable headshell so that you could swap carts for the different types of record.
